I can see why people would complain about the pace of the Godfather films; they're from a different era, and they are a lot slower than modern films. That doesn't stop me from forming an opinion about the mental acuity of someone who is unable to stay invested in a story if things aren't exploding every 12 seconds. But that's fine. Some people like chess, some people like checkers; people who don't like the Godfather like that game where someone jingles keys in front of their face.

I used to think the same thing (about Westerns anyway; I've always liked mob movies). But then I watched The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and I was like, "OK, that was a good movie; I still don't like Westerns, but I'll grant that one was pretty good." And then I watched Unforgiven. And I was like, "I really don't like Westerns, but that was pretty good. There are exactly two good Westerns and all the rest are crap." And then I saw things like A Fistful of Dollars, and For a Few Dollars More, and Butch Cassidy, and Tombstone, and True Grit, and Deadwood, and Red Dead Redemption, and I realized, "shit, I think I actually like Westerns." I still don't actively seek them out, mind you, but I also don't dismiss them based solely on genre; good is good, regardless of subject matter.

hehe, exactly. Unforgiven was the one that did it for me. If you haven't seen them, then you should check out The Searchers and Stagecoach. Classic John Ford.

I am not a fan of westerns as such either but I love those movies you mentioned. Unforgiven, for example, I appreciated even more the second and third time I watched it. A great movie transcends genre.

Comparing movies is a recipe for disappointment, IMHO. I just try to enjoy each one as it comes along. Godfather Uno and Dos are two of my favorites I'll watch over and over again. I even enjoyed III (don't hate me!)

Funny story from two days ago. I've got a twenty-something coworker with a wife and young son. He likes to flirt with the girls at work. I tried dispensing some Godfather II style wisdom by describing the follow scene to him. It's two simple lines of dialog, but it made an impressing on me when I was a young man freshly married:

Genco Abbandando: "Vito, how do you like my little angel? Isn't she beautiful?"

Vito Corleone: "She's very beautiful. To you, she's beautiful. For me, there's only my wife and son."

Beautiful.

LOL, Godfather thread. Maybe someone should start a beer or mustard thread too, really bring out the snobs.

I tried starting Godfather a couple of times, found it incredibly boring. *cue the asshole in skinny jeans and empty eyeglass frames* "You just like explosions, go watch Transformers."

A movie can be slow and thoughtful without being so slow that you don't give a shit about the story, which is what I thought about Godfather. My Dinner With Andre isn't exactly a CGI spectacle of giant robots and explosions, but I'd rather watch that than Godfather.

You guys like Donnie Brasco?

love it. Very underrated, imo. Donnie Brasco and Goodfellas tend to be considered as accurate portrayals to the real Cosa Nostra, in the US, as has been written/put on film.

Sopranos is great as well. A lot of people look at the Godfather, which is pure fantasy, as an accurate portrayal. The reality, though, is that the organization is very much top-down: Only one guy is really making any money, and that's based on the scratch his lieutenants pull in, who also tend to be getting by barely, from month to month. Often living in very modest accommodations, despite how they would portray themselves publicly. Look at Pauly Walnuts in the Sopranos and Pacino in Brasco.

my, you have a very narrow frame of reference regarding educated people. Could it be that you don't get out much?

It was a hipster joke. Methinks maybe YOU should get out more.

Or maybe you just didn't get it because you're not sophisticated enough...

I hate hipsters...maybe even more than you. What I don't understand is how someone appreciating film for what it is, precludes: "hipster."

It is not so much story based, but a character based movie (in fact almost all great movies are). Just the very first scene (which I watched two times when I re-watched the movie for the nth time recently) sets the tone of the Vito Don Corleone character. How he speaks, the style of it, his mannerisms. I've read the book too and Puzo writes in such a way that makes the characters come alive.

And I am anything but hip.

The only thing that could make either of these two movies better if Daniel Day Lewis was in any of them. Maybe Michael's role

To me The Godfather I and II are part of Americano. Amazing films. I must have seen both a hundred times.
I always find something new when I watch them.

Love the Sopranos also. The HBO hit was based on the NJ mafia, and supposedly it's an accurate description. Also, loved watching Goodfellas.

Nobody mentioned Scarface, Another Pacino classic. Opinions on this film? I thought it was amazing. The script wasn't as strong as The Godfather I and II. I still thought it held it's own.

Enjoyable. Not in the same league as Godfather
