Who doesn't like Godfather 1 and 2?

Good analysis. But Michael paid a heavy price for all that he achieved. All the people he lost, alienated, all that he did. How it changed him, how it destroyed his innocence. The final scene of Godfather 2 where he is sitting by himself, reminiscing, contemplating, is arguably the best ending scene of any Hollywood movie. It resonates with a very basic human condition, the sense of loss we feel....

I actually enjoyed it and still rewatch now and then.

I need to watch that one again...I actually own it, but only time I watched it I was a few beers in and had no idea what the fuck was going on.
 
I so love the opening scene, where the Godfather (Brando) complains to the guy asking a favor from him that he did not come to him in "friendship" 🙂 Beautiful beautiful scene, one only Brando can do in the manner he did. You have to read the book to get a greater understanding of the Godfather character....but what two movies....I don't know how many times I have seen them. Every little bit of them is just so carefully thought out, so polished, so stylish.

The ending to Godfather II really moved me. Michael gained fortune and respect but lost his innocence. He was also lonely. He lost his family. His father, Fredo, Tessio, and Sonny were dead. His wife left him. Tom distrusted him.
 
I also loved Scarface. It doesn't hold up well when compared to The Godfather. It was still a good gangster film.
 
Never seen any of them, don't like mob movies. Or outlandish comedies dealing with drinking or smoking up like The Hangover. Come to think of it, never seen any Star Wars or Star Trek movies either. Generally speaking, I do watch sci-fi though, just not the ones where people dress up funny.

Thats my very basic analysis, but along the lines of what I thought of the films. If you can put yourself or others into the role of a person in the Godfather you can often then predict their behavior.

and that scene,uhh, so strong. It TOTALLY shows each character in their exact role - even michael. Michael is a character who always needs to be right. He wont accept people contradicting him. In his mind he is correct and there is no changing that. He also had too strong of a thirst for vengeance, which was really ignited when his first wife was accidentally assassinated. This thirst to prove himself correct is what alienates him from everyone around him because it consumes him. I could go on and on, but unnecessary.

Those long 45+ second shots are great.

I've seen them a number of times, starting about 30 years ago. Good, but nowhere near the top of the list anymore. The state of the art has advanced too much, and the films just plain look old, making it harder to take the inexorable trust-me-this-is-important style seriously, especially after Shawshank, which did it so much better.

They are good movies but I think people have them a little too high on the pedestal. It's great acting and all but I find the movies just move a little too slow for my liking.
 
I enjoy the entire trilogy. It seems like most people treat the third movie like it's The Phantom Menace, when it's still a very good movie, it just doesn't match the standard of the first two.

That said, there's a number of other crime dramas I find myself re watching a lot more. Goodfellas and Casino as others have mentioned, American Gangster, and maybe even Road to Perdition and Heat.
 
Never seen them. They may be incredible movies, but I have less than zero interest in anything mafia related (or westerns) and that has prevented me from watching them.

I used to think the same thing (about Westerns anyway; I've always liked mob movies). But then I watched The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and I was like, "OK, that was a good movie; I still don't like Westerns, but I'll grant that one was pretty good." And then I watched Unforgiven. And I was like, "I really don't like Westerns, but that was pretty good. There are exactly two good Westerns and all the rest are crap." And then I saw things like A Fistful of Dollars, and For a Few Dollars More, and Butch Cassidy, and Tombstone, and True Grit, and Deadwood, and Red Dead Redemption, and I realized, "shit, I think I actually like Westerns." I still don't actively seek them out, mind you, but I also don't dismiss them based solely on genre; good is good, regardless of subject matter.
 
Godfather and Godfather 2 are excellent. I think some people do not like them because of the (deliberate) slow pacing of the story. 3 is crap indeed.
