This word needs to be excised from the English language. It is terrible in every way.

Could we not just call it a cellular modem?

You do know that the concept/word dongle existed well before air cards, right?

EDIT: Eaglekeeper beat me to it.

From today's headlines....

Ann RomneyDongle: ‘Unzip him and let the real Mitt RomneyDongle out’

Edit: Hmm, I just read the headline before. In context, it gets even better...

Asked about criticism that Romney is "too stiff," Ann Romney laughed and replied, "I guess we better unzip him and let the real Mitt Romney out because he is not!"

For security at work I have to carry my dongle around in my hand, its infuriating having to bend down to stick it in just to do my job.

As a security product you have no idea how much hate existed for the devices. You could have 3 different pieces of software each requiring a dongle for licensing. If you plugged in one it might cause another to quit functioning so you had to plug and unplug constantly. Then there was the problem of needing to plug in a printer too and the dongle interfering with that so people used switch boxes, which had the effect of frying some of the dongles. It was a nightmarish software protection method.

May Flexlm rot in hell .

This (these?).

I just "installed" a wireless USB dongle for a keyboard and mouse. ;)

Back in the 80s, I had some software for my C64 that required a dongle to be installed on the datasette interface. I think it was one of the Links games, but I could be mistaken. IIRC, it was just a piece of plastic which fit over the card edge connector of the datasette port and had a couple of contacts with a resistor soldered between them or something like that.
