Whitewashing in American movies

I don't think this is really much of a problem. That is the accusation that Hollywood (American) movies tend to cast white actors for roles that call for mixed race minorities or giving overall preferences to whites in casting when a minority should have been cast. Like a movie based on a story or event that has a one quater Asian character, or one half or even higher. But they cast an all white actor. Made worse by the white actor not even looking partially like the minority race.

Now while that happens sometimes, I think the number of movies with minority actors already in them makes up for it. Just look at Morgan Freeman, who's in so many movies that alone takes care of the blacks.

And Danny Trejo movies. With all of his roles you've got the Hispanics well covered along with help from Michelle Rodriguez and Zoe Saldana. So that women Hispanics and women in general are not neglected. And not just one woman actress. I named multiple Hispanic actresses, two of them.

And look at all the Jackie Chan films, your Asians are well taken care of there. And the whites, don't even need to name any of them, they have plenty of representation and they aren't even a minority anyway, depending on your point of view.

So there you have the four major races. And like the four major food groups which are good for your physical health you have the four major race groups as outlined above for the social/racial health of the movie industry. I don't see what anyone is complaining about. And no naming of any of the movies by me. That could cause this thread to be merged with the big movie thread. Just actor names, so no big deal in regards to duplication.

Yes, movies are filled with white people because that's what white America likes to see. Like how the last two Grammy Award winning rap artists were white people.

I didn't even think anyone thought this was an issue anymore to begin with.

Why a thread ?

Aloha with Emma Stone :

Controversy
The film became controversial due to Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians accusing it of whitewashing the cast, and Crowe has apologized about the casting of Stone as a character who is meant to be of one quarter Chinese and one quarter Hawaiian descent.[28][29][30][31]

In June 2015, Crowe responded to the backlash: "I have heard your words and your disappointment, and I offer you a heart-felt apology to all who felt this was an odd or misguided casting choice. As far back as 2007, Captain Allison Ng was written to be a super-proud ¼ Hawaiian who was frustrated that, by all outward appearances, she looked nothing like one. A half-Chinese father was meant to show the surprising mix of cultures often prevalent in Hawaii. Extremely proud of her unlikely heritage, she feels personally compelled to over-explain every chance she gets. The character was based on a real-life, red-headed local who did just that."[32] [33]

Stone later said she regret her casting, and acknowledged whitewashing as a prevalent problem in Hollywood.

That one is a bad example of anything except excessive political correctness. If a character as written is supposed to look Caucasian, casting a known, bankable Caucasian actress makes sense instead of trying to find a 1/4 Chinese 1/4 Hawaiian 1/2 white actress who happens to look white.

I think it's done far less today than in past. And there are a lot of Non-whites playing characters that were originally white. A few quick examples are:

Will Smith in I Am Legend.
Lucy Liu in Charlies Angels.
Denzel Washington in The Manchurian Candidate.
Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury.
The Human Torch in the new Fantastic 4 movie.
The Rock as Hercules...

Plenty of examples the other way around too, but compared to Hollywood in the 50's and 60's.... nothing like it.

I don't care how politically incorrect it is. The more screen time Emma Stone gets the better. #somethingaboutthatchick

Not to mention in the comics Thor is now a woman and there are many gay characters. A hispanic spider-man, blah blah blah

you can cast any ethnicity in any role, as long as that role is not bound to a specific ethnicity. you can have a black superman, but you can't have a black rockefeller, just like you cant' have a white nelson mandela.

you can't have a white fu-man-chu either, but you can whitewash that if you want because, it's a fictional character, as long as the character is still chinese.

both. in one book he is a old white man in another he is a black samual Jackson ripoff.
I know, it was more for the people using the example of Samuel L Jackson playing Nick Fury in the movies.

I wonder what they'll say if the use John Stewart as Green Lantern instead of Hal Jordan.

In the internet age everything is an issue. :p

Particularly for people with short memories. The Little Mermaid gets a lot of flack these days for portraying Ariel as a girl so obsessed with a guy she only ever looked at that she's willing to change species and give up body parts for him. But at the time of release she was actually praised for being a proactive princess who was going out to get her prince, as opposed to just sitting around to be rescued. Was a new thing at the time, of course nowadays we have Frozen. But people still bitch about feminism in movies.

White-washing kinda falls into that category. Aside from the fact that African Americans are a minority of the population and are thus going to be a minority among actors, but we've got John Boyega starring in the newest Star Wars, Denzel has been playing roles that could have been replaced by white people for decades, Morgan Freeman and Idris Elba are doing likewise.

People tend to focus on problems and forget about perspective, and the perspective is a lot of problems people get all up-tight about are going away even if said people do absolutely nothing.
