Whites-only Basketball League

I don't see what the problem is. It's not like the NAACP is welcoming white guys with open arms.

The business idea will likely fail because white guys are boring to watch, and there won't be enough of a fan base anyway. No need to get your panties all twisted up.

To be honest, it would probably be good basketball.

I'm not here to troll or anything, but i've been playing basketball for years. When it comes to hoops, white and/or educated people actually play fundamental basketball. Never in basketball do you have to rely on pure athleticism. Just look at high school basketball. Some smaller, outer city white basketball teams (with absolutely no physical advantage) can win city and state championships. Meanwhile, many mostly black (what I played on) can win many games with athletic talent, yet choke in playoffs by playing elementary to near street basketball.

Even going to the gym. When it's nearly all white players, people pass around to find the best shot and rotate on defense. When it's mostly black players it becomes all fast breaks and a bitching contest. I could elaborate on that further, but it would ignite a huge flamewar I'm sure.

I never thought I would see anything like this. But, it is interesting. We have BET. BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TV. It's a TV station for all black's. So wtf is wrong with a league for all whites? I don't think it will be successful, but I find it to be a very interesting story. A lot of people are going to get riled up over this.

Bad analogy. BET is a station for all blacks but it does not ban whites from tuning in if they so choose... Black people are ineligible to play in this league.

We have women's sports leagues because the best women know they can't compete against the best men. These guys are essentially saying that they can't compete with black athletes, so they need to relegate themselves to playing against inferior competition.

On the other hand, the best white athletes and the best black athletes compete together in every major sport. Most sports have a disproportionate amount of black athletes, but there are many black athletes who would compete at the level of the inferior white guys in this league. To exclude them because they are black is disgusting.

The difference, as far as I can tell, is that while BET is indeed a television network geared towards black viewers, it doesn't explicitly bar non-black actors, guests, etc., from appearing. This basketball league, on the other hand, prohibits all individuals whose parents are not Caucasian from participating.

I'm not saying the league should be shut down, just pointing out why it might be garnering additional criticism. I do find it interesting that the league is based in Atlanta, which--last time I checked--is a majority-black city. Maybe all the founders were upset that they never got picked for teams at local community courts.

They are allowed to watch though, which is the same as me tuning in to BET to see all blacks.

I think the basketball league is just honest and upfront about what they are doing. I don't watch BET, but when I have had it on, I don't think I ever saw a white person on there. That said, they may not bar whites from being on, but they don't put them on.

So if they basketball league didn't bar blacks, but didn't put them on the teams, what would the difference be?

Also, that miss black america link posted is another good source.

Listen, I'm not saying I agree with this. But I've said for a long time that it is bullshit that there is BET, Miss Black America etc... I always wondered wtf would happen if whites tried one of these leagues. I knew there would be a lot of uproar, but if they legally get shut down is going to be interesting, as it sets a precedent to shutdown these other black organizations.

Also, home base for this league being in Atlanta is very mind boggling to me as well.

There's no ban on anyone else WATCHING these games, just who's on the roster. And while BET has no formal restrictions on the skin color of it's talent, I'd be surprised to find any Caucasian-hosted or -starred showed on the network. I'd be similarly shocked to see an Asian-descended person on the cover of Ebony magazine.

I'm not racist. I don't support this league. But to pretend it's more racist than many other examples available is foolish. Now excuse me while I get called racist for Googling "The National Association for the Advancement of White People".

Isn't there already an all white team/league? Arn't they the ones that play against the Harlem Glob Trotters and get beat down every game?

If these guys want to spend their money on this let them. They will fail all on their own and learn a more important lesson than they would when Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton called them names and tried to sue them.

racist!! But your statement does remind me of the 2004 summer olympics when the U.S. dream team got spanked.

NAACP and Affirmative Action are legal discrimination. So is BET.

What's the problem? If they want to have a whites-only league, who gives a fuck? Let them and mind your own business.

"Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color."

This distinction, no matter how you justify it, is just wrong. "Street-ball" follows the EXACT same rules and the difference is probably dunks, BETTER ball handling, and more exciting game play. To say that it is played by PEOPLE OF COLOR is just plain IGNANT.

Not really.

If they actually want to play basketball "by the rules" they could start a league to do that with no mention of race/color by simply stating that as their primary goal and enforcing those rules in the games. All they have accomplished with this move is give all the people that love to stereotype southerners some ammunition.
