When my ancestors got here from Southern Europe just before the turn of the century they were absolutely not considered white by contemporary standards. "whiteness" in America is a more malleable concept than most people think, especially over time.

Yes, a lot of people fail to appreciate or choose to forget that assimilation is a generational phenomenon. I hear stuff like that from my parents generation all the time and the get really annoyed when I start talking about their grandparents who came over and what their experience was like.
