What I don't understand is this guy was the runner up in the last election, yet no so-called experts I'd seen had him on the radar this time. So clearly he already had a voting bloc in place

he bowed out of the last set of elections - maybe they thought he would do the same this time?

Why attack the Catholic Church in a thread about a new Pope being elected?

You can't talk about the Pope without taking about the church. And to be honest, you can't talk about a new Pope absent of the many issues he has to face.

After reading more about the new Pope, it appears he is going to set out the welcome mat to homosexuals. He will NOT say homosexuality is wrong or such, but he has previously lashed out at the Catholic establishment for "hypocrisy and forgetting that Jesus Christ bathed lepers and ate with prostitutes." He is against gay marriage - due to homosexuality being a sin this is no surprise - but he is not against gay people.

He chose to live in a small apartment where the heat in the building was turned off on the weekends (he used a stove for heat) and took public transportation instead of living in the huge mansion the Church provided him and being driven around. He stopped taking the bus when he become too slow and started to inconvenience others.

He also condemned priests who would not baptize the children of unmarried women. He told his priests "These are today's hypocrites; those who clericalize the church, those who separate the people of God from salvation. And this poor girl who, rather than returning the child to sender, had the courage to carry it into the world, must wander from parish to parish so that it's baptized!" He was very angry.

I like him so far, though only time will tell.

There is a difference between talking about something and being a jerk about something. Talking about the problems is expected.

I was baptized Catholic but, yea... I'm only posting at all because I *feel* like I should care. I just don't.
I literally LOL'd. Well played.

True, but some simply have no respect for the Catholic Church anymore, and given its history and hypocrisy, can you blame them?

I agree though, we don't have to be jerks about it.

I find him very personable, and someone thrilled to have the new job.

Thrilled to have the new job means a lot, especially at 76, and head of the Catholic Church.

I think he will be an awesome Pope.

I can agree.

But time will tell... especially when faced with the celibacy issue (though, I guess they know Peter was married and was a fine Apostle at the same time).

I think this is a great hurdle seeing this is probably at the root of the recent controversies.

Do they bow out? I thought papal elections were very passive, at least in terms of appearance. So I would have imagined you have your allies do all the politicking and you never "bow out" of anything.

Why attack the Catholic Church in a thread about a new Pope being elected?

The Catholic Church is synonymous with scandal and pedophilia... and given that the previous pope was probably a participant in the cover-up it isn't at all a stretch of rationality to conclude the new one will be a participant too. He's got a very small window of time to change that before being forever lumped in with all previous popes in that regard.

I think it's a great choice. I wish the guy was a little younger, but he seems like a straight shooter without a big air of pretense.

The Church needs to admit to its failings in covering up abuse and clean house. We'll see if Francis is going to be the one to do it.

Of course, haters like some of the idiots in this thread are going to hate no matter what, that's to be expected.

That's always good there needs to be more people willing to tell it like it is and not being scared to offend the pc types.

The haters are just idiots and there a bunch of cowardly internet tough guys who wouldn't say this to the other religions.

You mean gay pedophilia. Apparently it was overwhelming gay priests who had problems not abusing children.

Is that fair? I'm not disputing that the Church needs to address its past, though the new pope is personally clear of any of that scandal.

Him not 'cleaning up' an organization the size and history of the Catholic Church is like blaming Obama for not fixing the economy by 2009.

Let's say you don't like to eat pork chops, and someone says exactly that. You replying that you don't like center-cut pork chops doesn't make their original statement wrong.

It's more than its past... it's the present. And how do we know he's clear of that scandal?

I have no respect at all for religious organizations; they capitalize on and take advantage of people's deepest beliefs. They're essentially big multi-national companies, except they enjoy tax-exempt status.

That's funny. All I have seen you do is attacking the Catholic Church in this thread but not a peep about the other religions. Hypocrisy?

I dislike blanket statements like the above, though I don't doubt you have some personal experience that has helped shape that POV.

I find that many religious organizations - from local churces and charities, to larger orgs like the Salvation Army or Mormon church - do a tremendous amount of good, even as I don't agree with their faith. However like any human-run organization, the bigger it gets, the most bureacratic and ripe for potential abuse it becomes. Our own government as a whole being the clearest example.
