There seems to be good word on the man - he refused to live in the elaborate home reserved for his position and instead lived in a small apartment. He refused a chauffeur and took the bus.

I can only hope he works to repair the Church's image - it needs help. I suspect that is one of the reasons he won.

I wonder if this marks the beginning of the Catholic Church reducing its material wealth?
Fat chance. "Pope Francis" would get assassinated before anything like that was allowed to happen, money rules this world - including the extremely (morally and otherwise) corrupt catholic church.

I am pretty sure we are past the age of Pope assassinations - they have not happened in centuries.

Reform is more like it.

I hope they at least listens to the cardinal who resigned (can't remember his name though) and admitted the law of celibacy is just tradition.

I think there's hope, honestly, but some of the laws and traditions need to be done away it. Let these men marry and control their own personal lives, let members plan their families as they see fit.

That would give people much needed freedom.

An interesting choice. The guy seems like a decent choice, and I'm sure the faithful in South America are rejoicing today.

The Church has plenty of faults and you could start hundreds of threads on all the things the Church has done (and continues to do) wrong. Why do some of you feel the need to troll this thread instead? This is about the choice of a new Pope.

Will the new pope protect pedophiles like the other popes? Is he a pedophile himself?

So who actually listens to the pope anymore? What authority does he actually have over people? If pope says do X, is everyone in the church required to do X?

I think because they've presumed the role of moral gatekeeper, and also assumed that the office of Pope was/is the office of "infallibility", then we see the amount of immoral and fallible things taking place there.

When you put yourself above others, the fall is pretty steep.

LGBT-issues aside, he seems like a decent guy on the surface... hopefully we'll at least see some incremental changes in the church.

(no, a thousand+ year-old organization probably isn't going to turn on a dime and suddenly embrace gay marriage, women priests, etc, but maybe he'll throw the abusers to the wolves)

I was baptized Catholic but, yea... I'm only posting at all because I *feel* like I should care. I just don't.

After reading up on his history, I would say there is little to no chance there will be a change in the official church stance on homosexuality. I am hopeful he will cleanse the church of abusers, due to the name he chose.

Saint Francis has been called the man who lived his life the closest to the way Jesus wants us to live than any man since, well, since Jesus Himself. I cannot attest to the truth of that, but what I have read said many scholars agree, so it is good enough for me.

If he has the political will to do it, he can change the world for the better. Start by cleaning house at home, then move on to spreading the great wealth of the Church into building infrastructure for the poorest people of the world.

I am very optimistic this will be a great Pope. For full disclosure, I have no dog in the race. I am a Messianic Jew so I do not follow the Pope's rulings at all. He is very Jew friendly, so that is a big plus for me. I just recognize the power the Pope can command if he has the will to wield it.

You do realize there's a vast difference between pedophilia and homosexuality. Pedophiles that target same sex are usually attracted sexually to adults of the opposite sex.

Never heard this before. Any evidence to back it up?

Why attack other religions in a thread about the Catholic Church?

He's just an idiot, is all. I have like 13k posts under my belt and I've been here since 2002. IIRC, from that time until 2008 it was open season on Islam. He's free to check out my past posts...
