African is a nationality, not a race. But it appears that race on birth certificates in the early sixties were not set in stone and they probably used African since he was from Africa and not considered the typical US black person. On the other hand, the conspiracy to make this baby the liberal US president in 2008 may have started very early. I believe I saw George Soros listed in one of the documents.

Much has changed since the 1960s, as racial and ethnic classifications become more realistic on paper. Within the early 1960s, race information on birth certificates was open-ended, meaning that there were no races to choose from. Respondents entered whatever race category he felt the infant fit into. Things changed in the late 60s. In 1977 the Office of Management and Budget established four racial categories for the U.S. Census, changing birth certification categories, also.
White
White, or caucasian is one of the four racial classification options in 1977. Within the 1960s a baby would only be classified as white if he had both parents that were white. The term, caucanoid, was also used, yet infrequently.
Black
Black is the racial classification that was used in the 1960s for most races of color. Other terms for black that were also used were negroid or negro.
American Indian or Alaskan Native
American Indians and Alaskan Natives were linked within the same category. Terms stated for them also included indian, eskimo, aleut or native. Rarely in the 1960s were the categories capitalized. Sometimes the names of the infants weren't capitalized in any of the categories, as well.
Pacific Islander or Asian
Pacific Islander or Asians were within the same census category in 1977. Until that time, within the early 1960s, these racial groups were also stated as simply Oriental or Hawaiian on birth certificates.
Some Other Race
Other races that didn't seem to fit into the other categories fell into the "other" category. In the early 1960's, at times infants were sometimes listed as "other" in the race field if the respondent couldn't determine a race.

Because that's all he had and that's all he needed. By law, that's what the State of Hawaii provides as an official, certified birth certificate. It took a special exception to get the document Obama produced today.

I hope somebody does a poll next year before the election to see how many people (1) still think Obama wasn't born here or (2) are unaware his actual BC was released.

I know Obama supporters don't agree but I think it was a mistake to wait this long. IMO, politics has shown us over and over that those who don't vigorously defend themselves often end up tarred/damaged. E.g., John Kerry and the Swift Boaters.

I'm not so sure. With John Kerry, as stupid as the Swift Boat thing seemed to ME, it seemed to be a factor for a number of people in the actual election. But I question how much appeal the whole "birther" thing really had outside of the people who disliked Obama to begin with and would vote against him anyways.

In fact I feel that this is often the problem with political "controversy". There's a difference between something that appeals to people who already agree with you and something that actually changes peoples' minds. I wonder if the birther thing is too much the former.

I think it takes a very special way of looking at things to blame Obama for this faux controversy instead of, you know, the people making the wild, unsubstantiated claims that had already been disproved.

If you look at where the paper curls, the lines in the green background are still straight and not curled like the lettering. What they did was scan the original and just replace any white from the original with the new green background with the llines in it. It's the same background from the first one he submitted and the same from similiar ones from Hawaii.

Yes, the private for-profit press chases the useless but sensationalistic ratings chasing fluff like this, while I just watched an excellent documentary on plastic bags (Bag It) on PBS, which had a lot of information new to me, such as how the issue isn't billions of bags floating around the ocean, it's that the bags break down to tiny pieces that outnumber food (plankton) with 6 to 40 times as much plastic as Plankton, and it's ingested by all kinds of animals killing them; or new info on the poison to humans of the plastics (for example, with the plastic poison that causes many things including autism, all over the place including baby bottles and food containers, we've gone from 1 in 2500 children having autism in the 1970's to 1 in 150 today.

Outstanding and important information which is unlike anything we see on for-profit tv, which is in the public interest, while Republicans say, 'end all funding for PBS'.

Not because of any public interest reason - but simply because every dollar on the public is 'wasted' as a dollar that could go to the wealthy, and because they do not want an educated public, one that understands the benefits of good government and protests corporate abuses.

We should be increasing the funding for PBS. That helps against your concern.

Perhaps the White House thought that the birther story made Republicans looks like fools and enjoyed that aspect of the story. But once the polls started to show that many Americans were starting to feel the same way the White House realized that they had put it out there before it starts to hurt Obama's 2012 chances.

I think Obama should have played it for all it was worth. Let the Republicans and Tea Party morons get themselves all up in a huff about it and let various candidates and politicians make retards of themselves on the public state. There was not one single substantiated piece of information that indicated Barrack was not born in Hawaii. On the other-hand a legal document per the Hawaiian government was released in addition to multiple government officials testifying to seeing the long form document. It was against their law to release the long form and he didn't want to give in to lunatics.

The masses of ignorant racists will never be appeased and will continue to produce conspiracy theories because they so deeply hate this president for reasons extending far beyond his policies. They can't limit the discussion to politics but instead must paint it as a vast liberal conspiracy to ruin America.
