no, that was in 1966 when England did win it.

1970, Leon, Mexico - West Germany 3:2 England (aet) was when Germany beat England, but it wasn't the final.

And it wasn't the ref who called it in, it was the Russian linesman (sorry, assistant referee!)

The song was originally written for Euro 96 as it was in England. It was 30 years since the last England triumph 1966+30 = 1996.

This is where it gets confusing.

The song was originally released for Euro 96, the penalties in it were referring to the 1990 World Cup shootout with Germany where Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce missed. The song was re-released for France 98 (due to popularity), which then refers to Southgate's penalty miss vs. Germany in Euro 96.

I'm not argentinian, but Maradona is the greatest soccer player ever, and everyone just loves Pele because he's more marketable because he doesn't use nose candy. But that has nothing to do with soccer skill and Maradona owns

And you enter the ongoing debate of who was the best ever. Pele, Platini, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Di Stéfano, Puskas, Maradona, Mueller, Baresi and so on. Each player had their own merits, in their own time. Pele, over 1400? career goals in 1000 games. Di Stéfano, possibly the most complete footballer? Maradona, the most creative individual etc.

Pele may not have been the best player on those Brazilian squads.
