Just looking at Rotten Tomatoes

Terminator 100%
Terminator 2 96%

Alien 98%
Aliens 100%

I like both sequels better than their predecessors, but I also like Cameron so maybe Im biased. Which was better, and for what reasons?

Alien was far better than Aliens. Scariest movie I've ever seen in the theater.

T1 was pretty good, but lacked the $$ to hang with T2.

Aliens > *.*

Well that's great, that's just fvckin' great man. Now what the ****** are we supposed to do? We're in some real pretty sh!t now man... That's it man, game over man, game over! What the fvck are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?

the first Alien should not be compared to the sequel...

the first one was more of a suspense type movie that did not rely on special effects to make its point.

Both movies kicked @ss in their own way...

I am sure it does not appeal to the younger generation since it didn't have something blowing up every 15 minutes (which is why I like the sequel better 🙂).

cant really compare T1 to T2. T1 was a low budget movie that did EXTREMELY well. T2 had a huge budget compared to T1. Both are awesome movies, but I liked T2 better

Maybe we could build a campfire. Sing a couple of songs.

Alien is a horror movie, Aliens is an action movie. I like Aliens more because I dislike horror movies. Alien is supposed to be the one of best horror movies ever made, but I hate the genre :shrug;

Why don't we just put HER in charge?!

All I know is I saw both when I was fairly young and I don't get scared by movies much anymore 😛

The Thing (since there was a recent thread about it) was a great example of something that was scary though, because a lot of it was a different kind of scary. (not talking about the monster effects stuff)

Question for AT:

Would these movies have been nearly as good without the female heroine roles?

Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Vasquez: No, have you?

sorry...couldn't resist...🙂

As I'm sure you know, I was thinking more along the lines of Ripley / Sarah 😛

The first in both cases. The sequels were just action movies. Now, they were very ood for sequels, and Linda Hamilton was amazing in T2...but the originals were better.

For Terminator, I think a lot has to do with the budget. In T2, everything that could be shown was shown, where the first had at least some suspense to it, and rough edges that really helped the feel.

For Alien, it was all suspense. I've not seen it in theaters, but it is one of the best movies to watch on a very dark (new moon) quiet night at home.

No (IIRC, Alien was originally written for a male lead). It also certainly helped the actresses chosen looked good, but did not have stars' pseudo-perfect look (yet, anyway).

Alien > Terminator > Aliens > T2

I love the suspense/horror in Alien.

I don't like sequels that much because the freshness is gone.
Kind of like Star Wars, Mummy, Indiana Jones, Matrix, Internal Affair, Young and Dangerous, Once upon a time in China, etc.

Alien/Aliens? Probably not. Ripley is awesome.

Terminator, though, only needed Arnold.

The original movies are better (if you saw them first), but the sequels are a lot better for repeated viewing imo.

Alien and Aliens were tow completely orthogonal movies stylistically. They must be taken that way. In pure terms, I feel alien was the better movie but that's like asking "What's better, Ride of the Valkyries of A love Supreme?"
