Sweet, salt, sour, bitter.

I prefer salt. Sweets are good from time to time, and I'm not a big fan of sour. Whether snacking or eating a meal I usually prefer a salty taste over the others.

Probably salt, but I'm a fan of all of them. Bitter and sweet I prefer in moderation.

Sour, fo shizzle. Love sour gummy worms. Next I guess is a tie between salt and sweet. Would vinegar count as bitter? If so, perhaps bitter is #2.

Vinegar is sour. Something like hops would be bitter.

I love a hoppy beer; my wife describes it as too bitter.

Definitely. I'm having trouble thinking of many bitter flavors though, and you can definitely go overboard. I can take large quantities of the others, with sweet to a lesser degree, but you ever get a bitter overload? Something like the inside of a walnut will give it to you. Those thin bits of separator inside. Eating some of that make the pores in my mouth feel like they're slamming shut.

You left out spicy (hot spicy).

The best foods are a combo of two or more of those flavors which is why Thai food is one of my favorites. It tries to combine all of those in a perfect balance.

If hot's on the table, I'll change my vote to that. I love hot food, both peppers, and horseradish(Is that actually "hot"?).

My condiment of choice is a mixture of yellow mustard and Worcestershire sauce. What I have leftover from burgers or chicken nuggets or whatever, I drink. Vinegar is my existence. Sour.

I was aiming for the tastes that the tongue can detect; as far as I know there is only four, and anything else you can describe is a combination of those four.

If I'm wrong then please correct me.

Otherwise, I would tend to think that spicy is on the bitter side, or - if it's a hot sauce - the sour side.

Spiciness is controlled by pain receptors on the tongue IIRC. So it's not a flavor per se, but the tongue is definitely (obviously) detecting the sensation.

On second thought I would have to agree with you. Spicy is not purely a taste but possibly should be more properly considered a flavor component, similar to umami. It's still one of my favorite flavor components though.

Salt - sweet - sour ------ bitter.

In that order but I like the first 3 to count all of them but bitter I do not care for thus why stuff like normal coffee / beer is not what I drink if it's bitter.

Walnuts are definitely bitter; now that you mention it I can't think of a bitter taste besides nuts/beer that I enjoy.

I think a bitter taste leaves that taste at the back of your throat. I wish I had a "straighter" way to describe :D, but I don't.

Anyone try those Nature Valley Sweet & Salty bars?

They're epic good. I literally can eat boxes of them within mere minutes. It's literally one of the best tasting and textured combination of sugar and salt I have ever tasted. The fat also helps.

I like stuff like that too, like peanut butter - love the hint of salt in there.

Salt, sweet, sour, bitter. Kind of in that order but I like them all really.

I don't have a single preference.

I love bitterness like a good IPA.
I love sour like any Brettanomyces brewed beers.
I love sweet like a good Danish Kringle (mmmmmmmmm!!!!)

I don't care too much for salty though.

What is tart?

I like Cranberry and Limeade type juices over orange/grape juice and such.
