Which system to get?

Well the holiday season is fastly approaching and I'm wanting a new console system.

It seems that a lot of the good games that are on the Xbox360 but that the PS3 has more power, Blu Ray and will possibly have a longer life as a result of it's power.

I'm kind of torn as to which one to go with though since the price drop of the PS3 to $400 and the Premium Xbox cost the same (on average).

So which would you get?

The Wii isn't an option, I've played it and while it's fun, I don't find it to have the kind of games I'm into and prefer traditional style of playing.

BTW I'm into FPS style mostly.

The two biggest games I want to play are Bio Shock and GTA4 when it comes out.

360. There are good games (lots of them) out today. Are you buying a console to play games, or to sit and be sad in front of?

My roommate, who was a hardcore Sony fanboi from '95 until this year is extremely happy with his 360.

I know you and i know your current set up. Though I recommend both i'd have to go against probably 99 percent of this board and tell you to get the PS3. I know there are games on the xbox360 that you would enjoy but the majority of the titles that you would play are on both systems and your wife will enjoy the blueray more than the HDDVD option of the xbox360. There are many more movie choices and if you really want HDDVD you know the deals are going nuts for it. You and your wife will enjoy it much more than the Xbox360 IMO.

I have all three consoles, and if I had to choose one - I would pick the Xbox360 without hesitation. Bioshock is only on Xbox360 and PC (AFAIK), and GTA4 is supposedly going to have exclusive content on the 360. There are many other great games coming out and already out for the 360 as well.

If you're into FPS, get a 360.
I bought a PS3 because I like JRPG's.

Oh, and this should probably be in the Console Gaming forum.

How does the PS3 have more power? Everything puts them about even give or take a little. teh diff. woudl need good devlopers and most say its easier to make content/games for the 360.

I voted 360 since it seems to have better content and is also backwards compatiable, unlike the $400 PS3.

I'd look at the games that are currently out and the games that are coming out and make a decision based on that.

But, since you asked - 360

the ps3 version of GTA4 is also having exclusive content. wich is kinda sillly actually. both are having exclusive content.

only reason i have not picked up a 360 yet is the failure rate.

It's gotten a lot better ... and some of the multi-system owners can probably give you better insight, but XBL > PSN.

Also, you should hold each controller to get a feel for them and which one you prefer.

If he picks up a 360 Holiday bundle, he will likely get the updated version of the 360 that uses 65nm chips for the CPU. The failure rate on these is low if you read around on the message boards. Much cooler and quieter.

I wouldn't count on the PS3 having a longer life because it has more power. Console generations are ~5 years. In 4 years it'll be 5 year old technology - albeit more powerful than Microsoft's 6 year old technology. They'll be putting out a PS4 around the same time as the Xbox 720 and whatever Nintendo's next crazy name is. Look at the last generation. The Xbox was the most powerful system, and the PS2 was the least powerful. Which one is still going strong? The PS2. It's not the power that gives it longevity, it's the huge installed base and the huge number of games.

yeah i have heard good things about the new one released.

might pick one up after x-mas. though i already have a Wii and PS3. not to mention i am out of HDMI slots heh

You pretty much answered this for yourself. Bioshock is only on the 360 (if we're just talking consoles) and the 360 version of GTA4 is supposed to have additional episodic content.

General responses from others will be as follows:

360 owner - Suggests 360
PS3 owner - Suggests PS3
360/PS3 owner - Will typically suggest 360

Think about it, if I say 'I have a 360 and love it' that doesn't really tell you much considering I have never played a PS3. I do know that the library of exclusive games on the 360 appeal to me more than the PS3 and I know I love Xbox Live. You'd have to get with someone who owns both to determine which is actually the better live system but from what I've read the majority lean towards Xbox Live even with the fee.

I think the best way to make a decision is to go to any e-tailer, click on X360/PS3 and select the 'Browse All Games' option including those on Pre-Order. Make a list of what games you'd want to buy today and the games that you would really, really want to play. How many are cross-platform? How many are platform-exclusive? Decide what those platform-exclusives mean to you - will it be Halo 3 or Gran Turismo 5?

I did that once and it was 360 for me. I haven't kept up to date with what's new on the PS3 but the last time I checked, I wasn't much impressed. I'm not a console guy but if I had to, I'd go for the 360.

This is a HUGE factor for me too. Different people have different opinions on which is better, and some people prefer one over the other because they're used to one from the previous generation(s).
