When doing individual medley, I always considered breast stroke to be the "recovery" stroke where after pounding hard on butterfly and backstroke I would catch my breath for the big freestyle finish.

When I did a mile swim, I alternated between freestyle and sidestroke with a little bit of backstroke.

Backstroke is the easiest.. barely have to do anything and you can get going at a decent speed, plus you can breathe whenever you want. Side is nice too.

Isn't 200 yards only 4 pool lengths??

you'll also need to swim 75 yards underwater to pass openwater (or something like that)

If you have trouble swimming that's gonna be difficult for ya.

75 yards underwater!!! Is that in one breath? That's crazy!

I think I was mistaken. It was 4/5s the length of an olympic pool, say maybe 40 meters?

I thought you had to do the swim with your mask on your forehead.

Wasn't there also one where you had to use just a snorkel swimming, w/o a mask?

My cert was like 7 years ago, so i don't remember (CMOS/YMCA).

I'd say do breast & freestyle

That's still tough, but it's at least doable. :)

Damn, that's more like it. I could do that but 75 yards is almost the length of a football field. I doubt I could do that! And I surf so I'm very comfortable in and under the water.

just got back, I did back stroke most of the way. It was a 25m pool, I had to swim 200m. Then I had to tread water for 10 minutes, I passed. This was PADI btw - it was easier than I thought it would be. You have to really be out of shape to not pass that thing

yeah, the tread water for 10 minutes seems tough but it isn't.

Are you serious that you need the least effort for such a small distance?

Think again.

Swiming over a mile is pretty difficult.

I guess I should mention that I used to swim 6000 Yards 6 days a week for about 3 years back when I was in HS......

I am certain I could still swim 1.25 miles nonstop. I may be 280 pounds and very much out of shape, but I can still swim.

Well that's just a wee bit more practice than 98% of the population, eh?

I'm a big fan of the backstroke personally, I can do that all day without getting too winded...however to each their own....my friends little bro is an avid swimmer, he can smoke us both doing sidestroke, I prefer back stroke, or breast stroke.

Most likely it is.
However, I think most people, especially someone who is into Scuba should be fully capable of 1/10 that amount ....
