Washington is horrid. It's fucking gray almost all year. If ain't gray then it's fucking sunny and raining or sunny and fucking freezing.

Overrated: Pacific Northwest.

Underrated: No clue.

I've lived in Western Washington most of my life and am not a huge fan of the weather. Yes, it looks depressing as hell most of the year but temperatures are pretty mild and the summers are beautiful.

I've recently lived in Southern California for about six months and it's both overrated and underrated.

Depends on who is talking about the state

California, for example. If you are from california, chances are high you will over-rate it by a large margin. If you aren't from there, you probably underrate it.
Yeah, California, New York, Texas are all vital to the country but are typically bashed by bitter people outside of those states.

over rated: Texas (we fought a civil war to keep this?)
under rated: Utah (for natural beauty)

Vermont is underrated. Incredible geography. Good jobs. Clean environment.
And anyone can carry a gun. Yet, almost no one does (except when they are hunting, and the hunting is great).

A lot of this is income dependent.

California can be awesome as hell if you have the change to live in a nice place near the beach in the better areas (Laguna, Newport, Santa Monica, etc), but pretty shitty pretty quickly if you have to live/work much inland. It costs bank to live well there.

Texas is a general shithole regardless of how rich you are. I live here. The politics suck. The restaraunts are average. There's no mountains, there are some shitty beaches way south, the drivers and roads are terrible, the architecture is derivitive and fake, the crime is bad in most areas, the downtowns are either corporate bland or total hoodrat plague zones, the lakes are full of drunk rednecks, the roads are full of 20,000lb suvs doing 90mph with texting drivers, it's pretty much hell on earth. Oh, and we have two seasons :

(1)- It's fucking HOT! Many summers have 60-100 days of 100+ temps, with humidity all over the place.
(2)- It's pretty cold and ugly.

Mormons are much better than people give them credit for, and Utah is thus a better state than its reputation.

Agree, Mormonism is a fairly ridiculous religion, but I've very rarely met a Mormon that wasn't a genuinely nice person to be around. They do suck at partying though :p

I used to live both in New York and California, so I can say with authority that they both sucked. They both have high taxes, high cost of living, and draconian laws. Hell... up until recently, it was illegal to stick a GPS to your windshield in California with a suction cup mount!

Oh, and don't even get me started about the hell that is the New York DMV... I'm amazed that someone has gone postal and shot up one of their DMV offices lately.

At least California had better weather and a more interesting selection of technology jobs available.

Overrated: California
Underrated: Alaska

Agreed. CA is gorgeous but there's a hell of a lot of problems that come along with that.

texas is definitely over rated

underrated, there are a number of them.

Have you ever been to/lived in Texas? Not overrated at all.

Overrated: California and NY
Underated: New Hampshire. Live free or DIE, bitches!

New Hampshire is an awesome state, gorgeous too. When I moved out of Boston I'll probably live there.

Wyoming and Idaho are both pretty underrated.

gorgeous states.

I haven't been to Wyoming but Boise was INCREDIBLE.

I know nothing about Delaware. Nothing. Ok, maybe I once heard it had something to do with potatoes?

I mean, even Minnestota and the Dakotas get more airtime.

Has anything ever happened there? Does it have any famous sons/daughters?

I'm not from the USA so here people don't know much about it.
I'd say the most overrated is NYC, because everyone thinks it's cool, there's shopping, art etc., but I'd never live there considering the noise and the shitty snow and snowstorms, the greyness of the city etc.
Watching CSI NY has confirmed that I wouldn't like it.
The rest of the US is all underrated, except california and miami.
Everyone here on the forums says cali is a shithole, but from abroad you just see the nice beaches, the nice weather, combined with the money.
In europe the rich cities with technological companies are in places with low sun hours per year (think germany), the mediterranean isn't anything like that, the souther you go, the poorer the people are (except in the french riviera and other special places for rich people), the shittier the roads, hospitals, economy. If you're rich it's okay but most people can't buy 2 luxury houses or live off their money without working a lot (because money is useless if you don't have the time to use it).
In cali you have the mediterranean climate and the silicon valley in the same place, it's like a dream. Also as a swiss I'd be used to high cost of living.

Miami looks nice but from what I heard it's got southern mentality so it's not really compatible for european people I guess?
Also alligators and swamps.

NY is way overrated, its taxes are among the highest in the country and they nickel and dime you to death.

WV is underrated if you're into nature (hunting/fishing/hiking/camping), very low cost of living, nice people and low population density due to its mountainous terrain. In the Fall the foliage is arguably the most beautiful you'll ever see.

ZOMG!!! Teh FREEDOM!!! Yeah, we have mandatory helmet and seatbelt laws here too. Those aren't draconian laws. It's illegal to text on a cell phone while driving here too but I still see hundreds of assholes doing it every day.

You really base your opinion of a city off a fictional TV show? Seriously?

Underrated: any of the states in the middle of the country (corn belt)
Low cost of living, low crime, nice clean cities.

Look through any best places to live/retire/raise kids etc etc type lists and look at all the midwest cities listed in them. Avoid the rust belt though.
