Which state in America is the most overrated/underrated?

See I think Alaska is OVERrated. But it could be because I lived there for so long. I don't know how it could be underrated... every show on cable is about Alaska. Deadliest Catch, State Troopers, Flying Alaska, Ice Road Truckers, Tougher in Alaska, Gold Rush, Bigger in Alaska, Palin's Alaska... and there's probably a few more that I can't think of right now.

It's overrated.

that's just overexposure. it happens when the bubble of being underrated for so long has burst.

The thing is, it's probably the best place to live if you are a teacher, though it certainly takes a special kind of personality to live there year after year.

How do you figure? We took a vacation driving along the east coast last year and ended up staying in NYC for a week because it was so cool, and we STILL didn't get to do everything we wanted. I can see why people want to live there, but maybe the fast pace of everything gets old after a while.

To be fair, OP asked for STATE. As far as States go, NY state is kinda crappy. Sure you've got lots of mountains and valleys and stuff but the cities in between are pretty terrible.

Back to NYC, I love living here. I love the hustle and bustle and the number of people. most of all i love the fact that I can go to the movies, the park, running along the waterfront, amazing museums, a Broadway play, awesome restaurants and bars at a moment's wish ALL within walking distance or a 15 minute subway ride. I genuinely DO NOT miss my car although i grew up in Jersey my whole life. Basically the one city in the US where this is possible. Winter or summer I have a ton of fun and a lot of variety. You want outdoors stuff? Long Island has a bunch of beaches via rail, we have skiing mountains nearby and 3-4 hour access to Vermont and New Hampshire. I'm not gonna go comparing these to CA, but they're there.

Edit: Sorry just had to defend my favorite city in the world. I've been to San Fran, LA, and most of the other major cities in the country. Always go back to New York with smile on my face. Also the hobos on the west coast are crazy...

for me the weather is a dealbreaker, and you can see that from the recordings and the news. Too much snow and grey-winterish looks.

hmm, Switzerland...hmm.

I've been to Switzerland (~2 months; mostly around Lausanne).

Such a gorgeous country. Though, from what the locals tell me, 2 of the weeks I was there are the only 2 non-rain, non cold weeks of the year. Isn't it mostly rain and/or snow in Switzerland?

Over: Florida (lived there, would never go back), Cali
Under: Maine, Nevada

Florida is a shithole.

Cali is a great place don't get me wrong, but it isn't "the best place ever" as those who live there argue.

Maine just seems to be forgotten or overlooked but I loved it.

Nevada is underrated in the fact that there is more than Vegas, but nobody seems to know this. Almost everyone who I tell I live in Nevada immediately asks "Isn't it hot living in the desert?" oblivious to the fact that Tahoe/Northern NV even exists.

"Left" coast makes sense to people whose idea of geography is while looking at a map... Try west coast. It isn't left unless you are facing north.

Don't you know why they call it "left" coast though? It's politics and culture that predominates that region of the country.

Dixiecrat is wondering how he could consider AZ part of the left coast b/c it is a conservative, McCain state.

I wonder how it can be considered a left coast state when it is not on the coast.

:hmm:

😀

Overrated: Any hick state

Underrated: NJ. Just because NY stuck its refineries across their borders, it gets a bad rep. Also garbage tv shows.. but really, if you watch those tv shows, you are pretty much garbage yourself, and therefore your opinion is pretty meaningless. You have beautiful parks, plenty of attractions, and access to 2 great cities.

So you're saying that New Jersey is the garbage dump of NY and PA, but that you shouldn't hold that against it?

Jersey sucks. However, its not really overrated, because everyone (outside of Jersey anyway) knows this.

have to agree with that. East Coast bums are much better than west coast bums--less entitlement? 😀

btw: it's BUM. a Hobo is something very different from a homeless dude sleeping on the street. They are a noble class, often fleeing a very successful, very mainstream life, and they just want to get away from things, riding the rails, experiencing the country and the world, quite often working their way across the country. I think a true hobo is almost US exclusive.

Why some fucks adopted that word and used it in place of Bum is beyond me, but for whatever reason, it annoys the fuck out of me that people confuse the two.

They are certainly above UK-variety of squatters when it comes to social acceptability, as well.

Tahoe is also CA. Vegas might as well be CA, b/c it would not exist without LA. 😉

The Tahoe that has gambling isn't CA (and that's what was being referred to above).

If CA fell into the ocean LV would take a hit, but it's enough of a global destination that it would continue to exist. Hell, without LA LV might be doing better since LV would pretty much be the new LA!

Reno is at the foot of Tahoe, and is basically in the middle of the desert. It seems like maybe 2% of Nevada is not desert, yeah?

yes, LV would survive now, absolutely. My point being: LV would never have existed were it not for LA.

Just think about the absolutely insane concept of LV--this ridiculous oasis of gambling debauchery, civilization, massive water and energy consumption in the middle of the desert. That could never have happened were it not for LA--the population, and particularly the type of population that exists in LA--feeding the LV economy.

Now, I don't know if this is true, but I wouldn't be surprised if most native Los Angelese consider LV just another neighborhood--regardless of the distance, of course.

I was watching History Channel and on a show about the history of the Mob, were talking about how they helped with Vegas in it's infancy, they purposely put it there because it was withing a relatively short driving distance of LA and of course the land was cheap but LA was one of the big reasons why it's there.

I know for a fact that Japan sells used panties in vending machines, and that "grown men" routinely read cartoon porn--in public, on the train, as if it were somehow normal.

...this is all i need to know.

😀
Those vending machines no longer exist and it's manga, not cartoon.

Except the mob didn't come to Vegas until gambling started in the early 30's. Las Vegas was an official city in 1911. It was settled by Mormons in the 1850s.

The mob may have chosen Vegas as a target for it's short distance to LA and legalized gambling, but they certainly did not "put it there" for LA unless they invented a time machine and went back 80 years to do so.

Of course they didn't give it the name, or incorporate an entirely new city...but you don't really want to make this argument that Vegas was something worth farting about before the mob showed up, do you?

:hmm:

Oh I'm not saying that most of Nevada isn't desert, but there are other places than Vegas. Reno I wouldn't classify as desert either as it's more of a mountain area but it's not far removed from the desert. And the lack of humidity is fucking awesome.

I just get annoyed when I comment about snow and my friends back east respond with "you get snow in Nevada? isn't it always hot?" However that could be because they are idiots.

haha, yes. I amazes me that people don't realize how cold it gets in the desert at night, and even moreso that they can't imagine how hat is ever possible.

Have you been through the High Desert region of Oregon? That place is....weird looking. :hmm:

I was going to mention Wyoming, b/c it is absolutely gorgeous--one of the awesomest states to drive through. strangely, eerily beautiful landscape.

but that's just it: drive through it. visit. DO not stay. Oh dear god...no!
I lived in Cheyenne for awhile. It is a pretty nice place.
