which printer do you guys recommend for me to buy???

i need to get a printer soon, but i don't want to end up with one that will have one of those expensive ink cartridges. I used to have an epson 600 and i could get generic ink for about 15 dollars or less. I have a budget of 150 dollars to spend. Any good, low maintenance printers out there>>???

the $99 canon. uses ink vats rather than having the print head integradted into the cartridge, so its a lot cheaper. like $10 for ink. my lexmark is $30. think i'll buy a canon when the lexmark breaks.

I'm going to keep bumping this thread for as much info as possible. My sister-in-law asked me the same question to replace her ailing HP 672 or one of that vintage. I said off hand that HP would be my first choice. Then I heard that the new generation has lower quantity of ink in the cartridge for the same high price :frown:

I had an old Canon BJC 2000 and my inlaw's had a BJC 4000. They both had problems with jets getting glogged if they weren't used regularly. Has Canon got this fixed yet? Are any Epson's worth a look? How is their cost per page VS Lexmark or any others?

I've been really happy with my epson 880. The generic ink is really cheap, and it works well. I don't know if they are still available though. Does a nice job with pictures, too.

I would say any HP LASER printer will work just right if you print a lot.

Wouldn't recommand cartridge-type if you are printing a novel everyday.

I'm quite pleased with my Epson 880 also. What ink do you use?

Epson is crap, IMO. Where I work they last about a year, and then die for inexplicable reasons. The networkable inkjets usually have the built in NIC die after about a year. Also, with an inkjet printer, you're much better off getting one that has the print head integrated into the cartridge so you replace the whole deal. Epsons just replace the inkwell, and if the heads get clogged (which they often do) then you're screwed. HP replaces the whole assembly, and in my experience their printers tend to last longer than Epson.

OTOH, inkjets are so cheaply made they are practically disposable anyway... I say get the cheapest printer you can find that has decent quality, but don't expect it to last longer than about 2 years. A better bet if you don't need color is an HP laserjet... the older models (LJ 2 upwards) are virtually indestructible and if they break you can replace most parts yourself with the right instructions...

using an epson 880 and its been good to me. cheap ink carts too (imitation ones of course). haven't tried it out with pictures yet

I think this is the S300. I have one and its pretty good. Cheap ink and fast printing.

well, i just need aprinter to print daily stuff like directions, rebates, etc...nothing fancy...
i just don't want a printer where i will have to spend 40 bucks for the cartridge....something inexpensive and reliable would do...
my epson 600 was good til somebody stole it...
i donlt now much about the epson newer models as i haven't kept track of them, but i'm just afraid they got smart and now they got some type of proprietary ink replacement mechanism 😛

<< Canon S600. >>

Ditto. The Canon S6x0 series is good, and they use separate color ink tanks rather than the (usually more wasteful) single tank. I have the S630, which I believe recently replaced the S600 in Canon's model line.

Also, the S500 is supposed to be just as nice quality-wise as the S600/S630, although it prints a bit slower. That'd also be a good choice, if you're looking for something a bit less expensive than the S630.

Another nice benefit of the Canon printers is that they are not "winprinters", unlike many of the cheap models from Lexmark, HP, etc. This means that you'll be able to use the printer in Linux, DOS, or other non-Windows environments if you ever wish to do so.

i'm in the exact same boat...i need a new ink jet printer.

I have an epson 600 also and it's breaking down now. I also bought an epson 777 for my bro and it's breaking apart after having it less than a year. I think epson printers are cheaper in price but they're really not that durable. Just my 2 cents.

Anybody else with any recommendations.

Too bad laFiera, your topic has been moved to the forum abyss known as Peripherals <sigh>.

From what I've been reading, it looks like the smart thing to do, would be to locate a discontinued HP model, like this DeskJet 932C or any other one that uses the old "full volume" ink cartridges. Newer ain't always better!

i'm really happy with my HP Deskjet 932C... i'd prefer the print head to be integrated with the cartridge as HP does. I offset the astronomical ink cost by refilling an original cartridge once.

i find that epsons are better as photo printers but are less reliable and are less suitable as general-use printers than HPs.

I have owned canon 600 older printer...more recently I have a Lexmark Z51 and a HP 930(very similar to 932)...

The Lexmark is an excellent quality printer except with photos...the black text is laser quality..the cd labels are print are awesome better colr vs the HP 930..the HP 930 prints better photos....my biggest gripes with lexmark are ink costs and "banding"/lines in photos..just looks bad...

I got the HP 930c almost 2yrs ago with estamp promotion....free printer if you used estamps....It is now my main printer the overall print quality is very good but I do feel the black and colors are not as vibrant as the Lexmark

I think the best think to do is avoid lexmark ink cost are high unless you will refill then not bad...and you will love the Z51 , Z52 or equivalent for performance and print quality....

Canon at least older models with little use got alot of banding/lines and the print head clogged.....

My HP 930 has been very good so far as well...

Jeez I gues I am zero help...sorry

I have to vent a little here. I bought an Epson Photo Ex about 3 years ago. Paid over $400. It was then their top of the line mid format printer. Prints stuff up to 13" wide. I used it in a Win 98 System and it worked fine. I now upgraded to Win ME and a new system...AMD of course and a high end one. Don't it just figure that the printer doesn't like Win ME for some reason. Prints a one page web page over several pages.....smudges my resumes on the 3-4 line. These all printed fine 2 months ago in Win 98 and a slower system. Epson tech suppport is the worst they have stopped replying to my emails. This is my 3 rd Epson printer and my Last! I wouldn't take another Epson if they gave it to me. I'm disgusted with their customer service and their lack of customer care. Gop to Planet Feedback.com and see all the unhappy Epson customers there with similar complaints and you'll get the picture. Buy anything but an Epson.:disgust:
