Which new Video card do you think offers the best performance per dollar?

I would suggest the best price for performance cards in this range would likely be last generation's offerings, particularly used 290/390 cards. While on par with AMD's current offerings, they should be significantly cheaper.

EDIT: looking on ebay, seems prices of the used Hawaii cards have gone up, possibly mining related. Obviously prices will vary, but I suppose if a good 290/390 is a good price used, that would make sense, similarly to the on sale furys. A good 290/390 should be priced at around $180 or less to be competitive.

I think it's worth mentioning that a 390 performs close to a 1060, but it draws over 2x the power, so it better be a lot cheaper

Sure it is. But I think the main point that I am trying to make is that the price to performance used to be better, even on the same cards as now. A new 390 used to be much cheaper than it is now, same with the used ones. It seems prices have gone up, while performance has stayed very similar within the same range of 290,390,470,480,970,980,1060.

The 480 is just a farce to be honest. The 390 was available brand new for $280 when the 480 was announced. So all you get is lower power consumption for having waited.

You could say the same about the 6GB 1060 but Nvidia had nothing to compete with the 390 so it does have a purpose.

At least buying a 1070 or 980Ti now gets you performance previously attainable only at $250+.

Maximum PC??? Didnt even know they existed anymore, although I used to enjoy it. In any case, I disagree. Looks like the 4gb 480 is finally available, but the cheapest one I could find on New Egg was 230.00. At that price, I think the 4gb 470 at 200.00 is a better deal. You save 30.00 and I dont think the playability will be much different between the two cards. And even though people love to bash it on these forums, I think the 3gb 1060 at the 200.00 price point deserves consideration compared to a 4gb 480 that is 30.00 more expensive.

No idea. I don't have any of these cards, I'm just getting back into building and gaming after a long long time. The magazine broke it down to dollars per frame, and that card came in lowest to be the best deal.

Nonetheless, to me, experience in the games would be a big factor in "best deal" and I'm not sure that card would cut it. I'm leaning towards spending more and getting a 1070 myself.

In the US either the GTX 1070 Mini ITX or GTX 1070 Windforce OC from Jet.com. Figure in the various discounts and coupon codes and either comes to about $360. If your serious about getting a powerful new gen card its about the only choice - the RX 480 or GTX 1060 are just midrange cards with performance no better than many last gen cards (GTX 980 or R9 390/390X for example). That's what I did and I'm glad I spent the extra $100-$120.

470 is the best bet there unless you really need the perf of the 1070. Those are all crazy high prices

I agree and that's why I bought a GTX 1070. I'm from the same country of techne (as a matter of fact, he brought me to this forum) and I'm trying to convince him to pick a 1070. We both like AMD, but...

The 4GB reference RX 480s are pretty much nonexistent now, I think. Those were the only ones that could be unlocked to 8GB.

Regarding the frame time analysis mentioned earlier in the thread:

I wonder how GTX 1060 3GB and RX 470 4GB would fare with detail settings turned down in order to use 144 Hz refresh rate monitors?

Does the GTX 1060 3GB card win (or widen its gap) due to the lowered detail settings reducing the impact of the reduced VRAM? Or does the 4GB RX 470 pull ahead due to increased VRAM requirement from low level APIs such as DX12 and Vulkan necessary to get 144 FPS (in some cases)?

I was looking at that card earlier, and did not see the 10.00 promo code. It does not have free shipping though, and the promo ends very soon. The 460 is by far my least favorite card of the new generation from either nVidia or AMD, but at under a hundred dollars it starts to be a decent deal.

Got two Galax GTX 960 EXOC 4GB on clearance yesterday for $89.50 each of their US web store. They put all their GTX 960s on clearance for between $79 and $99 bucks. Sold out all in two days. Even with shipping (they use FedEx) it worked out to $98 a piece. For a card about 15% - 20% faster than an RX 460 or GTX 950 with 4GB of VRAM that's about the best I could get for the price.
