varies with preference. Some like shadow mask and some aperture grill. Most agree shadow mask has sharper text and it has no damper wires going across screen and ag has more vivid colors. I prefer aperture grill. The 991 is great and has a lot of raving customer reviews. It is very good for gaming. And they are not the same. 990 is shadow mask and 991 is aperture grill.

Good, I guess I'll go with the FE990. Thanks for the reply.

sorry to jack up your thread but this might be a good question to ask for both of us...

is there a difference between the FE991SB and DP930 besides the refresh rates?

I'd go with the AG. I too had the decision between AG vs. invar shadow mask a few years ago (900IFT/955DF vs. 900NF to be specific). I never used an AG but I went with the 900nf anyway cause of supposedly superior colors. The text is still crystal clear, and I was never EVER bothered by the damper lines. I forgot about them after a few weeks of use!

The 930 uses the new mitsubishi U-NX gun which is a single gun as opposed to trinitrons gun which uses 3. The single gun produces tighter focus plus it has a extra focusing lens in front of the gun. The 991 uses the stock nec 3 beam gun. The 930 has the diamondtron natural flat screen. 991 uses the plain diamondtron tube. The diamondtron nf is totally flat and it has no flat piece of glass infront of a slightly curved tube. The tube its self is flat. The plain diamondtron tube like all other "flat" screen monitors has a flat sheet of glass in front of the tube which is very slightly curved. All in all the 991 is very nice and you will find just as many satisfied owners of it as you will the 930. BTW there are only 2 manufacturers of trinitron tubes in the world: Sony and Mitsubishi and they make aperture grill tubes for all other manufacturers. ie the viewsonic p95+ monitor uses the mitsubishi diamondtron tube. Dell ag monitors use a sony tube. The naviset software that you download from nec site is quite nice. With it you adjust every facet of the monitor with your mouse while naviset displays display patters on the screen. Very fast, nice and accurate!

Eagle forgive me if I am wrong but I was under the impression all samsung crt's use a shadow mask tube even the 957. The 900nf is .20 dot pitch and there is no such thing as a .20dp aperture grill tube.

Well partially correct. I thought I had heard something about some discontinued Samsungs, appearently it is their AG monitors. The current models are all shadow mask just have different fancy names it looks like it. The .20dp advertised for the 900nf is the horizontal measurement of it, which makes the 'actual' diagonal reading of .24 or .25dp I think.
