I actually got introduced to the Black Album (before I liked Metallica) becuase a friend of mine wanted a copy of it for himself (before cd burners were really widespread). Now they're my favorite band and I own every cd and a few live shows (that I purchased from livemetallica.com) as well as some bootlegs etc. Kind of ironic.
Whether you agree or disagree with their stance doesen't change the fact that they made good music.
Why deprive yourself of good music just because you don't agree with the band?

Do you guys think there's any chance their next cd will be remotely good? I know they're going to the studio to begin working on the new cd sometime soon.

Then listen to the older stuff. Kill em all might be a little too raw for you, but Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets will be up your alley. If you like JP and IM, then you probably like a good guitar solo, which are aplenty on those albums.

Also they've already started recording and the CD should be out before the end of the year, I'd guess fall or thereabouts.
As long as they bring back Kirk's solos then I'll be happy, hehe. Kirk played a solo that IIRC isn't in any of their songs during the DVD some kind of monster and it was pretty good.

Exactly. Master of Puppets is still one of the must important, most influencial albums in the last 20 years, no matter what they as individuals have done extra-musically.
It's like saying Wagner's music is worthless because he was a virulent anti-semite, or saying that Heidegger's philosophy is worthless because he was a member of the Nazi party.
Mmm...maybe Metallica will be a bit too heavy and unmelodic for you.
Still worth a Shot though. I think you might like ...And justice for all because it's their most progressive album.

I'm with Eli, I would take them all. They all have a good unique sound. Many like to hate Load and Reload for departing from the traditional Metallica sound, which is true, it is a departure, but I think there are still some good songs on there. It's just not great if you're in the mood for something frantic to get headbanging with.
St. Anger (their last album) is kind of out there.. they tried a little too hard to get back to their 'raw' sound IMO. The production sounds like crap, there's no guitar solos as stated earlier in the thread. The lyrics are generally poor and simplistic, and James really sounds to me like he's trying too hard and screeching a bit instead of sounding nice and gravely. Overall I'd give it two stars out of five. Not awful, but there's definately a lot of better Metallica to listen to.
S&M is probably my overall favorite as well. Great selection of tracks, great sound, I love every layer of music of every track.
And I'm hopeful about their next album. They did fire Bob Rock, who encouraged a lot of their Load/Reload sound, and they're supposedly looking specificly back at Master of Puppets for musical inspiration. Can't say that's a sure fire thing, because I thought they were supposed to be looking back to their older albums for inspiration with St. Anger, and St. Anger didn't sound much like classic Metallica at all. So hopefully this is a good shift and we'll hear a nice evolution of that garage-band-sound St. Anger was striving for.

If I were to recommend one Metallica CD, it would have to be Master of Puppets. Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning are also in the same league.
