Crazyfool,

I think you made a great choice. The one that I played with was very nice. I liked the quality, and the look but I didnt want to wait so long to get it. Please let us know how you like it, as we are interested in other peoples oppinions.

thanks,
Mack

You got it, but even though it came with free fedex shipping it won't be here until the 27th! So it will be a few days. :(

I will still come back with my review and how I feel it compares to my present KDS 19" Trintron tubed monitor which I dearly love but it's footprint on my desktop is Bigfoot-like and generates way too much heat for my tiny little bedroom.

I won't sugarcoat my opinion. (like I ever do :p )

:)

I have been considering the Hitachi and the NEC 16ms LCds but after seeing pictures of the Viewsonic VP171b and reading what MrGamer and TypeM have said, I ordered one today from Newegg for $499 with free shipping. Can't wait for it to arrive!

I have a question for MrGamer or TypeM:
How long is the DVI-D cable that comes with the monitor?

My PC sits on the floor at one end of my desk and the monitor is on the other end of the desk. I am trying to determine if the included cable will be long enough to reach. Otherwise I will have to see about getting a longer cable.

I have another qustion: Can you adjust the brightness and contrast when using the monitor with a dvi cable?

I originally thought you guys were talking about the Viewsonic VG170m (I think), which is just a gray monitor without dvi. But then I clicked that Newegg link and OMG...What a nice looking screen. I was considering the NEC 1760NX, but now I don't know. Things get so complicated on these forums. :D

Beware: Although NewEgg is a great online reseller, their dead pixel policy sucks. They will only replace a new LCD that you have purchased from them if there are 8 whole dead pixels or more.

To me that's unacceptable.

A company like Planar (LCD mfg....check em out at planar.com) will replace with only 3 dead sub pixels, which is only one whole pixel.

Something to consider...

I saw the Viewsonic VP171B in a shop today and I liked what I saw.

Funny thing is it stood besides an Acer AL712 (17"/1280x1024) and it seemed the Viewsonic was a 4:3 screen, while the Acer looked like the Hitachi, a "true" 5:4 screen. Anyways this had me a little bit worried, then I got home and crunched the numbers from the various spec sheets and sure enough the Viewsonic is off course a 5:4. Very weird experience, but the Viewsonic must have the bezel covering more of the screen.

But I am really getting hooked on the Viewsonic, the problem is here in Denmark the Viewsonic costs $ 825, while I can get the NEC 1760NX in Germany for $ 600. Considering the Viewsonic comes with a DVI thats probably worth $ 35, is the Viewsonic worth $ 190 extra. I am seeking advice from those of you who has seen both (Mr. Gamer/TypeM and others). So wise members, let your voice be heard (across the atlantic...lol  ).

BTW the NEC doesn't have pivot does it ?

Are you saying the viewsonics bezel is distorted? ive heard this monitor uses an optical illusion when viewing thinking its actually smaller or something..? does the overall screen look distorted? is it rectangle? whats going on.. i was considering buying this monitor untill i heard about the shape of the monitor problem. now im thinking of either the Hitachi cml174, dell 1800fp, nec 1760nx or the samsung 172t....help :(

(Also, how much of the screen is viewable? im guessing about 1/4 or 1/2 of an inch is shaved off due to the thick bezel?)

i've had my viewsonic vp171b(~$500 shipped) for about a week now, purchased site unseen from newegg. the pic quality is absolutly *great* running through dvi.

my original pick was the nec 1760v(~$400 shipped) (no dvi). the local microcenter has 2 on display, one plugged into a splitter and another plugged directly into a system. the one via splitter showed expected quality loss. the one plugged directly was noticably better.

while i havent been able to compare the viewsonic and nec side by side i feel there really is no need. the differences in picture quality is obvious. color shading, xp cleartype aa desktop fonts etc etc. the vp171b wins hands down. the extra $100 for dvi and pivot doesnt seem unreasonable imo... not to mention the picture quality.

the nec 1760nx has dvi but no pivot and is priced around $450 if i'm not mistaken.

answers: yes you can change contrast/brightness while going through dvi
answers: the included dvi cable is 5-6feet long(?). i can check when i get home.

Thanks jasyn.

Gary Shandling, go to a shop to see the monitor. But I just thought it was strange. Maybe I should measure the screens in a shop, now wouldn't that look stupid. Anyway the specs sheets all say the same, 13,3" x 10,6" in display area. Now I my next mission is to find a shop that has the NEC, Mission Impossible.

My Viewsonic VP171b was delivered today. Newegg never ceases to amaze me with their shipping, I ordered it just yesterday at 2:30 pm with free shipping.

This is one beautiful monitor! Right now it is connected with the analog cable as the supplied DVI-D cable (2 meters long) is too short to reach where I keep my PC. Ran the MonitorsDirect.com Toolkit and have no dead pixels, also saw no ghosting or streaking in the tests. The swivel option is very cool and useful for web browsing, I'm using it right now as I type. The bezel is thin and looks great to me. I have not seen the Hitachi other than in pictures and I saw the NEC at CopmUSA recently. IMO, this is the best looking of the three.

I am very pleased with this monitor.

FWIW I just browsed around MonitorsDirect and they list the same viewable area for the NEC, Planar and Viewsonic. So I guess it's just an optical illusion. It's all in our heads.

Hey guys,
Sorry about the long time and no questions answered. My wife just gave birth to our 1st child so I have been doing father duties. Anyway, the Viewsonic does seem to be a little smaller than the normal 17" LCD, but I believe that is due to the extremely small bezels. I can see so much more of the WALL behind my office desk than I ever could with the G520P. I believe it is the best looking 17" at the moment. It is very crisp, clean, and performs EXCELLENT! I love being able to zoom with my sniper scope in UT and actuallly see the people in the dark areas. I highly recommend it to anyone!

Wow, congratulations.

I just read a few threads over at amdmbforums.com and found that the Viewsonic has a antiglare screen, which the NEC apparently doesn't.

I dont know if it does, but I did not see a glare with my window at my back and the sun baking me and the monitor ;) . I do like the monitor, and have plans on another one!

Anyone have comments on the Viewsonic while watching movies? My 15" Viewsonic VE150 shows dark scenes way too dark, to the point where you can hardly see what is going on.

I was considering the NEC 1760NX, but now I don't know

I just read a review of the NEC 1760NX monitor here in the UK in PC Format(June version) and they gave it a very good write-up (88%) the only bad thing was no DVI cable included, which I agree with ,it should of been included for the price.

Pelikan,
I watched a few fast action / car racing DVDs on the monitor and they looked GREAT. VS says that is supports HD 720i, and I do not doubt it as the picture is very clean and crisp looking. Very liquidy in nature scenes. I love it, my only wish is that it is bigger.

No, have you? It is actually one of the cheapest 16ms monitors in Denmark, a little more than the BenQ FP767 and the same as the Hitachi CML174. But I think I am getting hooked on that Viewsonic VP171, I really like the design.

Edit: Damn keyboard.
