Everquest is probably my favorite game of all time with the most amount of time played. I spent years playing that game. 2nd was the Lord of the Rings Online.

Every MMO I've tried since then has been less than a year (ESO, Neverwinter) Also tried a different genre, like Elite Dangerous. I seem to have more time now to play, but everything that comes out nowadays doesn't seem to hold my interest enough to dedicate a lot of my time and effort, even if it's free to play.

Still waiting for Everquest Next to give it a shot, but I'm really getting tired of waiting.

I would not pin your hopes on Neverquest, I do not see it coming out, if it does it is likely going to be very disappointing. I would expect Pantheon and Saga of Lucimia to both come out before Everquest Next despite being Indie MMOs, and likely be more enjoyable too.

Favorite online game was probably EQ1 for me....come to think of it, I guess it is again now I am playing on the P99 server. Having tried many MMOs since, 18 months tends to be the max I can get before losing total interest.

EQ was great - I think fans might like Rift. It's very generous 'free to play' with unlimited locations and max level and questing included, main issue is $5 spend to sell in auction.

I generally avoid online games because I prefer artificial intelligence to real idiots. However I do enjoy Elite Dangerous and usually play in Open Play because the multiplayer part isn't very intrusive and you rarely encounter other players. It's also fun when you do encounter stupid human players. One was trying to shoot my ship on the landing pad but he ended up flying straight into the station and exploding.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 in multiplayer also has some entertainment value with all the stupid, reckless drivers honking their horns and crashing into everything.

Path of Exile is really awesome! If you have played Diablo in the past you will love it because it is even better. It's easy for beginners but also a lot of in depth optimization possible in lategame.

Historically? Warcraft 3 (playing MOBAs before they were a thing /hipster) then WoW. Nothing's been steady since.

I gave ESO a whirl. Still playing that. There's no sub, so I can quit any time I want to!

I used to spend a ton of time in Star Wars Galaxies, that game was so addictive and fun

How was that? I played in the early days but didn't stick with it. I remember there was a ton of depth with crafting, and that player made cities were springing up all over. The most OP thing was a bounty hunter with knock down shot paired with the animal handling tree far enough to get a rancor. Oh, and/or being imperial and summoning an AT-ST.

I lost all interest in online gaming outside of browser games like Bingo, Chess...etc which I rarely play anyway.
