1. go optical, I find it much smoother.
2. logitech mice with mouseware 9.0 and higher drivers allow ps2 rates to be overclocked to 200 without using third party programs like ps2rate.
3. Can only speak for logitech but their optical mice are all usb but come with the adapter for ps2.
4. I believe cordless mice are limited to refresh rate of 60, may be wrong here but that it what I remember.

Conclusion, if in a market for new mouse buy an optical one, not much more expensive and you can feel the difference, at least I can. Besides no more cleaning out the junk on the rollers.

I'd go with a USB optical mouse - that way you can try it, and if you don't like it, hook up the PS/2 adapter. I have a logitech USB optical mouse and I use the PS/2 adapter. I was using it as a USB mouse, but then I filled up my mobo's USB ports (scanner, webcam, printer, palm pilot), so i had to bump the mouse over to PS/2.

Do new BIOS releases allow you to use a USB mouse in DOS/other "non-supported" OSes? I think I've seen something similar with USB keyboards. BTW, I am hoping to go completely USB for input with my new system (mouse, keyboard, KVW, headset ... but still have a sound card and speakers for MP3ing/gaming/etc.)
