Which is the better HSF

I'm running a 6600 on P5W DH with the infinity. at 3.2 I was idling at ~34ºC and peaking at 50ºC, but that was before I pus as5 on it... now I'm clocked down a bit and idle at 23ºC and peak at 34ºC or so.

You'd also prolly need to get an aftermarket fan for the infinity.
 
I don't think the infinity was out when the tuniq tower become unavailable so I haven't seen any comparisons.

But all the top oc'ers in the world seem to have a tuniq on their board so who knows though.
 
They'll be pretty close from the AC, CB comparaisons I've seen (where A = Tuniq, B = Another HSF, C = Infinity). But given that the Tuniq is cheaper and that all the top OCers use the Tuniq, I'd definetely go with that one.

I know I probably would have spent the extra $15 on the Tuniq over my Ultra-120 (which is great) if the Tuniq had been available.
 
The Tuniq is still unavailble though. I havent heard anything about production restarting anway. Might be able to find a ebayer selling it but thats about it.

edit: Skott I just read your post and I have almost the same setup (parts still arriving). Do you think you could get a 6600 to 3.0 GHz with the Zalman?
 
Yup just bought one. And JUST received my Ultra-120 lol. Which one do I keep? I'll probably test the two but I'm leaning towards the tower just cuz it looks cooler (no pun intended)

It's a giant square block with a hole in the middle. And the heatpipes don't even match the body. Maybe sunbeam just got lucky w/ the design. The Ultra-120 is much more pleasing visually.

of course he can...thats really not all that hard...

with my old p4 3.2EE I had it ovr clocked to 4.4 using the Zalman 9500.
There is no reason he couldn`t get the 6600 to 3.0..
 
Quite the dilemma here. I've now gone from looking at two to four coolers. Infinity, Tuniq Tower, Ultra 120 and the Zalman 9700. I really don't know how much room I have to play with as I haven't gotten the mobo yet. I guess, I'll get the mobo/cpu, put it all together then order the cooler after I can measure and I'll add some cool neon cables and stuff. If I can get the E6600 to 3GHz with any of the four, it will probably come down to profile and price. I don't have a side window, so looks don't really matter.

Just out of curiousity, does overclocking an E6600 to 3gig reduce cpu life? Any other gotchas I need to know about for overclocking it?

Yanno... I did click that link and could have sworn it said Out Of Stock. So I just went back again to check and it says its Out Of Stock. Or I'm misunderstanding what they are saying.

Okay, I see what it says now. ! = Out Of stock. Thats why I got confused. I guess its in stock unless that little ! is present. Anyway, I'm glad they got it back in stock. I was beginning to think they werent going to make it anymore.

3.0GHz on a E6600 & P5W DH & 9500hsf? Oh, Yeah. No sweat. Easy peasy. Wouldnt need to do anything more than set Memory to 2.1v, 800, and fsb to 333fsb (like I did with current set up). In fact I was gonna build my next rig around this very setup using the E6600. But since I delayed over the G80 power and amp requirement (cause I didnt know what psu to get for possible G80 setup) I'm now gonna wait for the new mobos that launch next week along with the G80 and see what they can do. I like the P5W DH mobo but looking forward to supposed better mobos that run supported SLI.

Hard to say. Even with the Tuniq (considered the best hsf)you may not get 3.6Ghz. Its certainly possible, some have done it but anything over 3.4 is gonna be skill, luck, and your E6600 stepping I think.
 
Since no one's pointed this out yet, I will. The tuniq tower is loud like a 747 at take-off if you want maximum cooling. IMHO, I value silence alot more than an extra 100mhz. It's a tradeoff you'll have to consider.

To answer your question directly, if you'll pardon the pun, a Tuniq Tower 120 is infinitely preferable to the Scythe Infinity!

My reasoning is three-fold. The Tuniq Tower 120 (1) has much better fin density, (2) a much better mounting system, and (3) includes a fan controller. 😉
 
Another good alternative is the Tuniq Tower 120, which is unfortunately out of stock everywhere right now. We consider the Scythe Infinity to be the better CPU cooler, but the Tuniq Tower 120 is very good and might cost a bit less.

I chose the 9500 because it wasnt as heavy, not as high, meaning less weight torque on the mobo, blows the air out the back towards the exhaust fan, performs nearly as well as the big leaders in cooling, probably more quiet than the bigger hsf (there are big debates about this), and I like the looks of it (which shouldnt matter in the grand scheme of things).

These things weigh like 800g! I thought the 550 of the Zalman was bad. Couldn't there be issues wit such heavy heatsinks?

Despite everyone's concerns every time this is brought up I have yet to hear of a mobo breaking from the weight. With the mounting systems they have (backplate and all that) it spreads the weight around very well so that one point isn't under too much strain.

Definitely under normal conditions (aka sitting on the floor) there should be no problems, however, if you're hauling you computer all over town I might be a little more worried and maybe even take off the heatsink before transporting.
