Are you using the latest firmware? My gf flashed hers back to an older firmware and her battery life has improved greatly.

Personally, I think the PlusTouch is excellent. It allows you to easily do absolutely everything on the player using one input. The "shortcuts" are the best part (slide left-right, right-left, up-down to get to different screens). What do you mean you "can feel the plastic?" thanks for the link. I found the problem. you have to use the cradle apparently to sync which is really lame. What if I am on the go? What if i am at work? The whole point of a cradle is to sit at a desk. Also, WMP can't sync photos or album art? Thats lame. No USB 2.0 when using WMP? So the slow transfer I was seeing with the toshiba software is even slower? That sucks.
When i say I can feel the plastic I mean that the Plus touch pad isn't flush the plastic casing. So when you drag your finger down it, it doesn't feel smooth. This was the case with both players we had. By center button, i mean pressing the center of plus touch for play.
Can this thing even be used as a hard drive?
The same way a PMC syncs photos, using MTP. I don't see why they couldn't do it.
All my other concerns still stand for me atleast.
Creative Muvo TX FM (1 gig). Smaller than a cigarette lighter and a flash player, perfect for the gym.

Do your research before listening to all the brainwashed idiots screaming "IPOD!!!". Maximum PC has the Rio's and Creative's DOMINATING the ipod.
You'll notice that many of those who suggest other DAPs (not just in this thread) are happy to return to the thread, give advice and links about different players, discuss pros and cons. The majority of the ones who drop an iBomb in the thread just post and leave. Except for 000r000, at least he has some reasoning behind his fanboyism.
People seem to love the new Sony flash DAPs, but they're a little more than a shuffle and, of course, you have to deal with the SonicStage software.
There's also the mobiBlu player, if you want to get her something that is unique (but will drop some $$$). I think it's cool as hell.

I can't speak for other brands/models, but I'll recommend the iPod as well. It has a great neutral sound quality (although you will absolutely need to replace the stock earbuds). It's compact and easy to use. The iTunes software works well, although you will be limited in terms of playback formats. It also has larger available sizes than many competitors (are there any other 60 GB players on the market?).
I don't really care about FM Tuners and WMA/OGG support. If those things are important to you then you'll need to look elsewhere. One of the nice things about the iPod is the sheer number of available accessories. This is particularly useful when connecting to your car. As 000r000 mentioned, Alpine's KCA-420i box has a native connection to your iPod, allowing you to control it with your headunit and providing optimal sound quality.

Toshiba Gigabeat F60 is another 60GB player. There are rumors of an 80GB player coming with the updated players using perpendicular storage later this year.
iPod does have a crapload of accessories if you need them. Personally, all I need is a good pair of headphones.

If it had WMA support, I would've been all over it (although I love having a color screen now).
