Thanx

What's your budget? Within 5 minutes you will be flooded so be prepared. :)

EDIT: BTW, if you we planning on getting a LCD, you can easily afford a 21"er

IBM P96 is a great monitor also. FD Trinitron tube. It is better than the KDS in my opinion, and i see both of them daily.

Check EgAY right now (do a search for ibm p96), you can pick up a brand new IBM P96 for a great price. Not many people have bid on it yet. The monitor came from a huge auction that ingram micro had and a few dealers picked them up at a great price. I just happened to notice that one of them is auctioning them off on egay. Anyways, if you want it in the next few days, that is your best bet.

ndee:

G400 will run you to as high as $580-590, plus shipping you're looking at the $600. Also we've been hearing problems with it, just look at this thread. So I would probably not bet on the Sonys.

The E400 is cheap, but it's resolution/refrehs rate is not that good, both Samsung and KDS has better res/refresh, and comes in a lower price w/o any issues. I highly recommend the Samsung since you can get it for as low as $440 from Onvia.com which means free shipping as well.

I've had an IBM Diamondtron and a Iiyama Diamondtron, and didn't like either of them. Have a Sony G400 now, and it's good. I've seen good shadowmask and good aperature grill. None of the above are great, but for the money, I'd take the G400.

Sorry to say this again, but I will have to recommend the Sony G400, it is a very good monitor, to me, the only down side is the price.

My second recommendation would defintly be the Samsung SyncMaster 900NF though

Should prolly edit ur subject to say 'What is best 19" monitor for <$500, cuz "the best 19-inch monitor" & the best 19-inch monitor for <$500 are prolly two diff monitors.

Ppl get frothy when the see the word 'best' without a qualifier.

I read a bunch of monitor threads, and most seem to agree that Sonys are the (very) best. Forget which model. I don't have a Sonys, tho. But I *do* have an Iiyama Vision Master Pro 450.

Review

Copy-n-paste quotes:

"Iiyama carries on their legacy by bringing what we believe to be the finest 19" monitor anywhere at any price."

"I have yet to see a monitor anywhere have better picture quality. Graphics were so clear, they almost looked as if they were going to pop out of the screen! I'm not trying to overhype this monitor, however, this is truly a site to behold."

"We feel that you'll not find a better 19" monitor on the market."

Specs:
Diamondtron NF tube
Max rez: 1920x1440
Recommended rez: 1600x1200 @85Hz
.25mm horizontal dot pitch
dot clock: 300MHz
Both D-SUB + BNC connectors

Iiyama has great cust sppt.

Have not seen Samsung SyncMaster, but specs are comparable, and price seems to be dee-lish.

Since the monitor is our primary analog gateway to the digital world, and typically costs mor than any other single component, and cuz it's something u will likely have longer than your CPU & gfx card combined, it's obviously an important decision.

Radboy:

This is waiting for you.

Now for my version of this for the Samsung,

Review

Quotes:
"The first thing I discovered after opening the box is that the exterior size of my new 19" SyncMaster 900NF isn't much bigger then my old 17" Mitsubishi."

"I powered up my computer to find the screen is perfectly centered. All I had to do was resize it. The On Screen Display is able to save up to 10 different modes, which is a very welcome feature. It worked with all resolutions I tried. I believe most users will appreciate this feature since you don't need to re-adjust you monitor when switching between resolutions"

"I was delighted by the fact that the 900NF can go well above its specs. (I feel a need to push everything to it's limits) With the Matrox Power Desk, I ran this big baby at 93KHz refresh rate when using 1600 by 1200. It was great!"

"The screen appears totally flat. The picture quality is excellent with a dot pitch of .25. Even at such a high resolution and refresh rate, everything remained where it should be. "

Specs:
DiamondTron NF
Max res 2048x1536
Optimal res 1600x1200@85Hz(89Hz max)
0.25 Grille Pitch(Horizontal dot pitch is only for shadow masks)
Pixel clock frequency 240MHz
5BNC + Optional USB
$445

The tech support is excellent.

Nice post.

Does it cost extra for the BNC conns? (u said 'optional - or is USB optional?). The Iiyama comes w/ BNC standard.

I will admit, if the price diff u quote is accurate (have not checked myself), then I would opt for the Samsung myself. I got my Iiyama almost 2-yrs ago when they first came out. It was the *only* Diamondtron NF monitor on the market,

The Iiyama has a 25% faster dot clock - not sure how much diff that would make.

Check this spec .pdf. It gives diff specs for SyncMaster 900NF.

It is from Samsung's site & shows recommeneded rez of 1280x1024 @85Hz, and max rez 1600x1200 @87Hz.

can u tell me why the spec disparity between what seems to be the same monitor?
