Which is smarter? Cat or Dog?

We've just been having a petty discussion this morning and I set out on a bit of a quest to find out which is actually smarter. I can't seem to find ANYTHING scientific on the matter. Google turns up a bunch of cat/dog fan sites which are useless. All anyone seems to be able to offer is thoughts about how independant cats are or how much more easily trained dogs are. These things don't seem to guarantee higher intelligence, at least by my way of thinking.

So if anyone has any good scientific information on the matter I would greatly appreciate being pointed towards it.

Thanks,

CK

you see the video of the cat on the bed then the owner scared it by moving his hands towards it quickly?

The cat turned around and jumped, smashing its head into the wall:p

Nothing scientific on the matter because anyone with a clue knows that dogs are smarter. cat lovers pretend that cats are smarter, they're just "more independent". Well then my fish is a genius.

I like cats and have two (no dog), but dogs are far and away more intelligent, even if they do stupid things like eat paper and their own sh*t.

i think my cat is pretty smart.
hes definitely smarter than some dogs out there.
but on the whole i think dogs are "smarter" than cats.
that doesnt mean dogs are better, though.

LOL nice link I have 2 cats and no dogs at the moment. I would say dogs are smarter by a long shot. Mostly because my cats do very similar things to the one in that video ha.

Cats.

You don't see cats guiding blind people around or protecting things. They let the dogs have those crappy jobs. Why work when you can live like a king?

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there.

They are both smart in their own ways.

Dogs are trainable, although their "trainability" is really just pavlovian reaction. They don't really UNDERSTAND what they are doing, they just know that if they do certain things, they will be rewarded, so they keep doing them.

Cats are not really trainable, but they are self-sufficient, and very deliberate in their actions. Cats can hunt and survive on their own much better than dogs.

They are both intelligent, but two very different types of intelligence.

I tend to think of cats as more intelligent because they seem to be actually "thinking" not just reacting to positive/negative reinforcement. Not that dogs don't ever think, but cats seem to do it more.

Cats, how smart can dogs be if they eat thier own crap, along with the fact that cats bury thier crap, period.

You guys are confusing intelligence with the ability to train a slave.

Cats can poop in a toilet, or at least in a litter box, saving the owner from having to walk their pet in bitter freezing temperatures!

That has nothing to do with intelligence. It's training.

I would say dogs are smarter.
