which only means that the neighboring counties get a lot of revenue from alcohol sales. Do people at this college not know how to drive?

here are two ways to ruin your college experience:

1-live at home
2-no alcohol

I can't think of any better ways to waste college.

3-too much alcohol and not enough academics... that whole "learning" thing that's supposedly the point of college.

why pay for condoms when you can get them for free on campus?

FWIW, a lot of colleges have policies where freshman aren't allowed to have cars on campus unless they're a commuter.

of course, my first priority freshman year was becoming friends with a sophomore who had a car.

First off you should NEVER EVER go to college close enough that your parents can get there without going on an airplane or at least driving several hours, that is just plain silly. You should not under any possible circumstances live with your parents, even if you somehow need to save money you are missing out on HALF of your learning by living at home. Remember, what you learn about in class is only half the point, the other half is the life lessons you learn once you get ut for your own. For example how to take care of yourself without mommy doing your laundry, and motivate yourself to work hard without your parents forcing you to. Not to mention the whole women and drinking stuff which living at home pretty seriously kills. Baring some huge turnaround, College will be both the biggest learning experience of your life as well as the most enjoyable time. This will be the high point in your ENTIRE life, wasting it by staying with your parents is pretty much the worst decision you could ever make in your entire life.

I was a dorm lifer (all 4 years at uni).

I can't say I recommend doing it for more than 2 years, but it is ridiculously convenient. I spent a lot of time studying and training, so I only got to know a few people in the dorms...many of my friends lived off-campus.

In your second or third year, you can look at sharing an apartment with some friends.

BrownTown said it pretty well. The dorms are really fun. And don't be the weird kid who doesn't hang out with anyone else in the dorm (my roommate).

I'd be worried if he was talking about joining a frat, but if this guy is making a decision between the dorms and living at home, what he lacks is not academics but social opportunity.

Bring flip-flops or something for the showers.

Laptop, clothes.. call your roommate and arrange who brings TV, microwave, fridge, etc. (most colleges will have some sort of fridge+microwave rental).

Home. Dorms are like prisons, except prison cells are bigger. I remember staying in a dorm for 1 week during a grade school trip as the university there had basically let us in to save the school/us from paying for hotel rooms. We only slept in them and that's it, but to actually live in one I can't imagine. I need my personal space.

Also, you'll save a load of cash staying home, even though being away from parents is great and all, I don't find it's worth the extra cost. Best to save up then get a house after college. 2 grand per year, or 20 grand per year, make your pick. :p (assuming dorm = also living out of town and paying for own food and all)

How about pissing away 4 years and $100K+ to graduate with a mediocre GPA, a worthless degree and few to no marketable skills? THATS how you waste college.

I do agree with this... living in the dorms provides a good transitional period for you in between learning to take care of yourself 100% (cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, etc) and having mom take care of you. If you can afford it, I would put in 1-3 years at the dorm and then the balance in apartment. I would recommend living alone for at least 1 year before you graduate. You will never know what it is to be truly self sufficient until you live completely alone.

People will likely still bring the stuff in, unless you're going to BYU or Liberty or something.

I go to a small, private, "dry" college and would just like to say the binge drinking on the weekend is much more prevalent than the public universities/state schools i've been to on the weekends. Just in my numerous experiences.

Anyway, live in the dorms.

This. If you get out to six hours or so, you have an excuse to stay away for as long as you want.

College is a great time to figure out who you are, who you want to hang out with, and who you think you want to be. You already got a trial run in high school, but college introduces (slowly) the concept of living independently.

I think it's a very important experience.

Hahaha...no. It is more difficult though.

At school, women are everywhere. The dorms, your classes, participating in sports, clubs and other groups, as well as just hanging out around campus. And even with classes and studying, you will have way more free time than you will in the real world.

Post-college, you either have to cold approach, or meet women through social clubs or sports you fit around work. Best to beef up your social skills in college when there are plenty of opportunities to learn.

The biggest mistake any college student can ever make is living at home. Ever.

C'mon man, you say you are going to college close enough to home to live there, and you are worried about what all to pack? Try moving in first and then you can run home and pick up whatever else you think you need to have on campus.

Are you kidding me? Is this a real question? Which will be more fun, living away from your parents or with them? Any more brain busters?

The people suggesting you live at home are idiots.

Any money you spend living in the dorms is SO WORTH IT. You learn so much more than the 'homers' do by living in the dorms.

DO NOT LIVE AT HOME. THIS SHOULD NOT EVEN BE AN OPTION.

dorm life was great. i wouldn't trade those memories for anything

but living off campus in a house with friends was even better!
