It depends on the question. More fun? Dorms, definitely... then apartment later on

Better for your studying, more thrifty, etc.? Home... then apartment later on

Either way, you'll get a good college experience. It's just going to be heavily focused on different things. I live at home and still am able to hang out, party, have fun when I need to. But it's a lot easier to cut myself off from the world when I need to buck down and study.

here are two ways to ruin your college experience:

1-live at home
2-no alcohol

I can't think of any better ways to waste college.

How about pissing away 4 years and $100K+ to graduate with a mediocre GPA, a worthless degree and few to no marketable skills? THATS how you waste college.

Seriously? For the most part your GPA only matters for your very first job, and then only if you're looking for a .01%-type job. Chances are you'll actually use about 5% of the mostly worthless garbage you're forced to memorize in college, and you will learn 10x as much in your very first year in the "real world" (hell, you'll probably learn more in any internships you do than in the classes you take).

College is 4 years of extended adolescence. Enjoy it. The soft (social) skills and relationships you carry out of there will likely be far more important than your grade in "The History of Modern Europe 301".

Don't live at home...and if at all possible, strongly consider transferring somewhere a) At least 4 hours from home b) warm year around c) on a coast.

Dorms for 1 year, then get share a house or apartment for the remaining years.

Dorms were nice while you get adjusted to your newfound freedom, but living in an apartment was about 10x nicer than the dorms. No pesky RA's to shit on your parties.

dorms definitely... living at home during college is the same as going to high school all over again. There's a reason why college life is one of the best times of your life.

During my senior year, I moved out to an apt with my then-gf... we were pretty secluded from any activities whatsoever. Go to classes, maybe get a bite to eat, then go home. Much preferred having friends down the hall that everyone (incl gf) hangs out with at any hour of the day/night.

3-too much alcohol and not enough academics... that whole "learning" thing that's supposedly the point of college.

QFT - Partying is good and all, but the point of collage is to learn. Forget that and you are destined to a mediocre GPA followed by a lot of wondering why you can't find a job.

I would recommend that you join some clubs and social groups while on campus. Join one or two that fall in line with your interests, and then join at least one that your roommate is in that you would never have thought to do on your own. For example If you are a math/computer guy, join the drama club. There is a lot to learn from other people of diverse backgrounds.

Yeah, I'll join a few clubs. I plan to major in Information Systems, but I'll probably join the Republican club in college and a christian organization, and maybe one or two other organizations.

Also, would one get laughed at if one was at a party and when offered alcohol, said they preferred Red Bull(or other energy drink) and chugged one of those down instead of drinking the alcohol?

So after college its impossible to meet women and have a social life apart from bars?

Well, it's harder, that's for sure.

Whatever you don't, don't join any political organizations in college. They are ALL self-righteous douchebags who sit around agreeing with each other, bashing the other side, and thinking that their half-baked ideas about "a perfect world" actually have any value whatsoever in this one.

Point is, you don't need to join an organization to do all of these things. Just go to any place that has alcohol and perhaps a philosophy student or two (just to get the arguments started).

Did you even go to college?

I don't drink, don't go to parties - it isn't for me. I am part of a Campus Ministry, I do intramural sports, I'm an RA, I'm pursuing a CS Engineering Degree, I hang out with friends, and I am having an absolute blast in college.

Anyone who says you have to party/drink to have fun at college, just gave the worst advice ever! Please don't listen to it.

That being said - you really do need to live in the dorms. I have matured more in my 3 years of college so far than I could have imagined - and I am still striving to get better.

I wasn't advocating that the OP live at home, I was advocating that the OP spend time studying and learning rather than drinking and partying all the time. You are right, GPA does matter for your first job, and your first job has a lot to do with setting you down a good course for the rest of your career. I knew people who went to school to become doctors and lawyers, then partied pretty hard in college and got BAs in worthless areas. The world needs people to manage The Gap, and there is nothing wrong with that type of job. However, that wasn't where their aspirations were. If they had spent more time working and less time partying, maybe they wouldn't be where they are today...

Trust me, no one at a collage party is going to care if you drink or not. The less you drink the more for the rest of them. A few might try to talk you into joining a game of beer pong but they are just trying to get you to join in the fun. Tell them, 'maybe some other time' and they will leave you alone.

We only slept in them and that's it, but to actually live in one I can't imagine. I need my personal space.

Also, you'll save a load of cash staying home, even though being away from parents is great and all, I don't find it's worth the extra cost. Best to save up then get a house after college. 2 grand per year, or 20 grand per year, make your pick. :p (assuming dorm = also living out of town and paying for own food and all)

Hey, so you want to come over to my place after this? You have to be quiet though because my moms is asleep and has to get up for work in the morning. Hey, where you going?
