Which is harder, roller blading or ice skating.

I'm a pretty decent roller blader, but have never gone ice skating. My girlfriend wants me to take her ice skating and was just wondering which is harder, and how different are they from each other? Thanks

ice skating is a little harder because stopping is more complicated, and the blade is thinner but other than that they are very simmilar

i've recently tried both for the first time. The rollerblading i pretty much got the hang of right away. the ice skating... i couldnt wear the figure skates without falling on my @ss but.. when i switched to those hockey skates i could stand perfectly and i didnt fall once. It made a world of difference.

make sure you get an ice skate that fits really well... i rollerblade a lot, and i like to rollerblade in a boot that's about a half size bigger, but it should fit perfectly in an ice skate...

if you know how to t-stop in rollerblades, you should be ok stopping in ice skates...

Ice skating is better for falling, less friction to ripe skin and clothing apart. Plus you can use the ice to keep the swelling down.
🙂

Ice skating by FAR (imho of course). Blade is thinner, it's cold, and maybe it's just because I have flat feet but the skates hurt my feet like hell, no matter what size they are and what type. (Hockey vs Figure)

No Poll?
I think rollerblading is much harder. I still can't figure out how to slow down/stop on roller blades. Ice skating, it was intuitive....just like skiing....
I prefer figure skates b/c of the "claw" on the toe you can use to push off.

huh how can they be different?

it took me a while to get used to rollerblading from rollerSKATING when i was 11. I just started ice skating 2 years ago and it was very intuitive, same moves & feel as rollerblading.

how can they be different? you are on a different surface with each one.

If you're a decent roller blader, you'll pick up ice skating in no time. There are subtle differences but it won't take long.

I used to roller hockey a lot, and I still have problems getting a firm footing on the ice. I would say ice skating require a little more balance since there are less contact surface and it's more slippery.

but both are same concept with subtle differences

blading = a blade of rolling wheels on a non-slippery surface
skating = a blade of metal on a slippery surface

How's this even different opinion:

Rollerblading is easier, because you probably have your own rollerblades and keep them in good condition (wheels not worn out severely)

For ice skating, more people than not rent the skates at the ice rink... the skates are cheap quality (thus the hurting feet because of more pressure on the center of the foot, like walking on a tight rope), and the blades are rarely sharp enough to give you a good edge.

However, if you cast aside equipment issues, ice skating is easier. (at least for me, because I could ice skate backwards really well). It also takes less time to master stopping on ice skates- you can stop a lot faster than on rollerblades - do it the way hockey players do it. Plus, if you goof while stopping in ice skates, you just go sliding on your side across the ice, without falling down too hard... If you goof stopping on rollerblades, it's a more sudden fall.

And, (speaking from experience), learn in hockey skates... there's nothing worse (trust me) than trying to catch your balance and falling down backwards landing on your heels while wearing figure skates. Note: I said landing on your heels. Look at figure skates... the blade sticks out an inch or so like a, umm, bayonet. Ouch.

If you know how to do one, you shouldnt have a problem learning nthe other.
From a pure beginner basis, rollerblaidng is harder. It hurts more to fall, and theres nothing to hold onto. Besides that stoping is harder...

You'll be fine. Seriously, if you can rollerblade, you can ice skate. It won't be the same since its on ice, but its not any harder. The first 5 minutes you may need to get used to it, but after that its easy. Have fun
