ok, just tried playing homm 4 again... no idea why i thought this was good. this game sucks. i was definitely thinking of homm 3.

HOMM6 is out too. It kicks my ass, much more difficult (at least for me). I'm not sure where it fits in yet to tell you the truth. 😛 I've just played scrimages so far, so I can't fully rank it yet. But, it has the potential to be my favorite, I think.

HOMM5 is my favorite though. HOMM3 is in a not too distant 2nd place. HOMM2 wasn't bad either, but lacked a lot of the extra polish and completeness of HOMM3. I never played HOMM1, but I did play Kings Bounty on the Genesis... never beat it, could get to the last guy but never win.

*edit - Oh yea, I only played HOMM4 once, didn't like it much, but I only messed around with it for maybe 30 minutes.

Oh yea, I also have both expansions for HOMM5. If you like that one, I recommend the expansions! Hammers of Fate is the one I like better, but both are good.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroes_of_Might_and_Magic_V#Expansions

The first Heroes V expansion pack, called Hammers of Fate, was released on November 17, 2006 in Europe and November 24, 2006 in North America. It includes a new race, the Dwarves, who have exclusive access to a new kind of magic, known as Rune Magic. Other features include the much-awaited random map generator and the return of the Heroes IV caravans. This expansion pack requires the full version of Heroes of Might and Magic V to play.

The stand-alone second expansion pack is called HOMMV: The Tribes of the East and was released on October 12, 2007 in Europe and on October 19, 2007 in North America. Tribes of the East includes the new Stronghold faction, alternate upgrades for all units currently in the game (bringing the total number of creatures to over 180), as well as new artifacts and spells.

homm4 was difficult to figure out. definitely wasn't cool. wasn't 5 a lot like 3 and less like 4?

2 was my favorite and the one I played the most, though 3 was probably "better". 4 sucked. 5 was ok.

I only played HoM&M 3. I did love the main M & M series though, except the last (Viking) one. That one sucked but VI, VII & VIII were awesome.

I picked 3, although I really enjoyed 2 and 5 a lot as well. To me 5 was a pretty similar to 3 but with better graphics, 2 had some pretty horrible balance if I remember correctly but it was still fun. 4 was just horrible, they tried to change too much and it just didn't work, ntm some heroes were severely OP in that. 6 seems ok but I've only played a couple skirmish games of it so I can't really judge it. It seems like they tried to change up the tier system for creatures again to make it less of a gap but I'm not sure how it really works out.

Only played 3, really liked it. Heard too many bad things about 4.

Will pick up 5 some day, maybe if it's on GOG.

HoMM 3.

Played HoMM 2 off a demo on a PC Gamer disc, and literally ran to the store 30 minutes later and bought it. Loved it.

HoMM3 came out and I was blown away by how good it was. Not only was their alot of strategic depth, but the AI would actually flank around you and steal your towns if you were not careful.

Played through all the campaigns at least 20 times over the years, and install it yearly to play again. HoMM 4 was almost linear in comparison, with really dumb AI... after about 10 hours I knew the HoMM franchise was dead to me.

I liked 2 more than 3, because the pace wasn't as rushed. With 3 I often felt like I needed to hurry to attack the computer before its massive starting advantage made the map impossible to win.

VI hands down for me, even if it's not HoMM (It's MMHVI)

III was brilliant, V was slightly better than imo VI is better than V.

I loved II, III is probably a better game but I still like II more. I don't see the V ~= III whatsoever. I tried the V demo and cried that they destroyed the game beyond the badness of IV. Dunno if I'll ever come back with Warlock/KB Series and a new MoM around the corner.

I did not like what they did with the stoiry in 5 and never played it past about the first mission. I got 6 long ago but haven't installed yet.

II has fond memories as the first one most people played and the 'wow what an incredible game' experience, but 3 did improve it a lot as I recall.

I played 4 some but can't remember a lot about it.

I have HoMM 3 complete as one of the best 'get it for new gamers' games.

I still remember when I stopped by Walmart in my junior year in HS to pick up a copy of Heroes of Might and Magic I and played the shit out of it on our 486 with my brother. Good times, good times.

Actually you're right, it was Homm 1 that a lot of people including me played first.

It's King's Bounty that it was based on that was not well known.

Tough choice, I picked 4 only because I liked the fact that the hero's were actual units you could control, rather than the normal stand back and cast spells type.
