These 3 coolers are pretty well thought of and have good results from people I've talked to. Now I need to decide which to get. My CNPS 9500 is pretty crappy for my C2D. The mounting mechanism with the 9500 is not the best for this application.

Using the same 120mm fan, the Ultra 120 tops the Ninja. The Ninja > Mine.

I would say Thermalright Ultra-120. Imgetting a C2D too, and i'll go for the ultra-120.

Now, the Ultra-120 doesn't come with a fan. I'm very ignorant when it comes to quality fans and noise isn't a concern for me. What's a good fan to pair with the Ultra-120?

Thanks Guys!

save half the price and go with the freezer 7 pro from arctic cooling $21 @ provantage. just about equal to the ninja/mine in everything except one degree or one dba.

For the Ultra-120 I've read that some people have mounting trouble with socket 775 because the CPU bracket doesn't allow good contact with the core. Has anyone heard of this or has experience with this?

Still not sure what fan to go with the Ultra-120

Personally, Panaflo fans are the best.

I am using a Thermalright XP90c/Arctic Silver 5/Panaflo HO 92mm fan on my e6600 C2D and i get the following temps:

Ambient temp 68F

Idle Temp: 17c

Load temp: 28c

Here's my question. It seems that ALOT of people have trouble getting good contact between the hSF and the CPU in the Socket775 systems. What did you do to ensure proper mounting? Did you put the AS5 on the HSF then squish it on the mobo, or did you put the AS5 on the CPU? Also did you dot it or spread it? People do different things, but I am having one hell of a time getting good CPU contact. (I'm using the stock HSF now since the CNPS9500 wasn't much better it seems).

How the hell is your idle temp lower than your ambient temp???

I also made sure not to over tighten the screws on the backplate which will cause the mobo to warp and ensure a crappy seat when you mount the HSF. You must not overtighten the screws!!!!

Followed the instructions on the arctic silver website. I also used Arctic Silver's Thermal Surface Purifier on the IHS as well as the XP90c. Then used a 1/2 rice kernal sized amount of the Arctic Silver 5 on the IHS and mounted my HSF. More is NOT better with Arctic Silver 5!!!!!

Dunno but SpeedFan reports the same as the Asus Probe II.

Here's a pic of my current setup. Although not the same ram and mobo (i have since upgraded to an Asus P5W DH Deluxe and 4GB OCZ PC2-6400) the orientation is still the same:

PIC

So you just dropped a bit of AS5 on the IHS and stuck the HSF on using the pressure of the HSF on the IHS to "spread" the AS5 around?

Correct. DO NOT spread AS5 on any CPU that uses an IHS.

IHS?????

i have a zalman 9500AT on my e6400, i spread the Artic Silver 5 thinly along the exposed cpu, then mounted, tightened the zalman (heavey) and get idles of 40C.

What's your room temp? I get 39C-40C with room temp of 20C-23C with this current HSF.

IHS = integrated heat spreader. It's what that big piece of silver thing you spread the AS5 on.

room temp like 80F 85F, 70F cooler at night

so wait, im NOT suppose to spread the AS5 on my cpu? it says to spread it out evenly like butter, then apply the HSF.

wtf?

I've always spread the AS5 on the cores, but the AS5 official site says you're not suppose to. Well, being how I never follow instructions, I spread AS5 on my C2D. When my Thermalright Ultra-120 comes in, I will try the pea and smash technique according to the official AS5 application technique and see what kind of results I'll get.

I really felt like I should document this with photos and screenshots and everything, but I was far too lazy. I wasn't satisfied with my temps when I bought my 9500 and used the self-spreading technique (had been using that method for a while). So this time around I elected to follow the instructions and use the grain of rice sized glob without spreading. I gave it a few days to set, and VIOLA!

Exact same temps...

I guess the moral of the story is that your thermal compound application technique is pretty insignificant compared to other thermal considerations in your build. Sorta like the effect that switching from onboard sound to a PCI sound card has on your FPS while gaming.

1dle 17c = 62.6 F inside case
load 28c = 82.4F inside case

ambient 68F = 20c -- outside case

Unless you are water cooling its not possible for you to have a lower temperature inside your case than what your ambient temps outside your case are. Not by 6 degrees f....

No matter what thermal paste you are using. Or whatever techniques you are using to cool your case.

Just not possible. If you are using some sort of program to check your temps out what you are using is most likely wrong.
Mobo temperature indicators are notorious for giving misleading temps.

It is impossible to single out any one heatsink as being the best.

There are way too many variables from computer to computer to say this is best.

I can recall a while back when those who bought the Ninja or even the zalman 9500 were complaining that they didn`t get better reading than what they were using before they switched heatsink.
Mind you these were people who were already using a top heatsink such as the XP120 or the XP90c or even the TT Big Typhoon.

So at best heatsinks are very subjective. yet there are different heatsink that are not of the calibre of these and a few other heatsink.

Remember a review by a competent reviewing site is only to be used as a guideline. Not as the gospel truth!
