I upgraded my R290 to a Fury a couple of months ago but would like to play BF1 in Ultra settings at 1440p 100-120hz so I thought I'd get a GTX 1080. My cpu is a 3770k. I've been a long time fan of EVGA but based on the recent news, I thought I'd go with another brand this time.

Newegg has a number on sale - http://www.newegg.com/Components/EventSaleStore/ID-59?N=700000038&SrchInDesc=1080

I've had Zotac before and had no issues. I am leaning towards the Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125873&ignorebbr=1 due to the 12+2 power phases where the others have 8+2 though they don't promise that you'll get the listed OC speeds just the gaming speeds and several reviews complain of their new cards having bent fins when they open their cards for the first time.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I just bought the Asus Strix GTX 1080. I got it for just $604 and the sale listed here ends tonight at $624. But from what I have seen with the very beefy sturdiness of the card and the potential overclockability it has great potential. I actually had a EVGA gTX 1080 FTW in my cart and thought twice because of some of the stories.
Unfortunately I cannot tell you how it performs since it is part of a Christmas build that will not be assembled until around December 23rd, 2016.

I'd rather spend $700 on GTX 1070 SLI. In BF1, that setup will wipe the floor with a single 1080. The SLI hate is so strong but for only $100 more, it's what I'd buy even now. There are plenty of games where 1070 SLI ~ Titan XP but at current prices, that's $500 less than what the Titan XP costs.

When 1080Ti/Vega drop, you can just sell 1070 SLI and get one of those. It's going to be far easier to sell each $350-370 card for $300 in 6 months. On top of that, SLI works in many AAA games released in the last 5 years. $700 1070 SLI is on average as fast as $1200 Titan XP.

If you check the benchmarks in BF1, 1080 is barely faster than a 1070, but 1080 SLI is much faster than a 1080.

Those are reference 1080 cards. A reference 1080 is only 15% faster than a typical AIB 1070:
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1070_Quick_Silver_OC/29.html

That means 1070 SLI minimum FPS in BF1 at 1440p/4K should be faster than 1080's averages!

1080's performance advantage over 1070 is less than 1070 SLI's over a single 1080. Despite that, a 1080 has a larger price premium over a 1070 than 1070 SLI has over a 1080. 1070 SLI OC @ 2Ghz is spectacular value, imo, the best price/performance for $600+ high-end segment in all of 2016.

I also think NV will launch 1080Ti in January/February 2017. I wouldn't never buy a mid-range videocard that's now 7 months old for $600-640 when it's going to be officially mid-range in a matter of months when GP102 launches. This is literally a repeat of 980 vs. 980Ti.

In 22-24 months since its launch, $550 980's level of performance can be bought in a $180-220 GTX1060/RX 480. 1080 is now 7 months old and it has barely hit $550 level. This card is going to be an even worse "investment" than a 980 was since you aren't even buying it around launch date for $550, and unlike 980 vs. 680, 1080 is practically just a Maxwell refresh architecture. That means 1080 won't be a future proof card for next gen DX12 games either.

TL;DR: If you waited this long to buy a flagship, I would wait for 1080Ti or Vega or buy 1070 SLI which is a superior setup overall than a 1080.

Amazon had some good deals yesterday with one going for $560ish but it looks like they are over.

This is a pretty compelling argument:

25% faster in a lot of games vs 25% slower in a few.

The only possible flaw I see is adoption of DX12 and possible non adoption of SLi/CF by devs.

Agreed. Even though I'm personally trying to get away from 290 CF, its the same reason why I never went Fury or 980 Ti when they dropped. It works often enough that I'd definitely take the chance of 25% slower. As long as you've got a fast enough CPU to not bottleneck the 2 gpu set up of course.

I got a strix a8g, step up from their base model but not $750+. Was 600, with $30 MIR and a free game (watchdogs 2) which I may/may not pawn off at another $30. Amazon/Newegg had it for basically the same price.

Thanks for the advice. I took your advice on the Fury for BF1 but that was before newer drivers helped to push 1070 performance. I definitely not interested in going SLI and that's why I'm looking at the 1080. I don't see myself going dishing out the extra money for 1080 TI and don't think prices will go down a lot on the 1080 when the 1080 Ti comes out. I'll review benchmarks again.

You might want to upgrade your cpu though before getting a 1080...could cause bottleneck situations in some games

Just get a 1080. Zotac is good, so are ASUS and MSI. I haven't had much experience with other vendors, but they're all generally pretty good. This should be decided mainly on price, pick the cheapest one that you can find :)

I have the Zotac GTX1080 FE and am very pleased with it. I have an EK waterblock on it as I like custom watercooling.
