Crysis3 by a good margin. And yes, Psycho is by far the most detailed, highest quality character model I've seen in any game.

Skyrim has crappy lighting and shadows, and no amount of mods will ever change that core component of the engine render. It comes off as static and cartoony, and I've tried just about everything to make it look better.

As big of a fan as I am of graphic quality, I still think anything resembling photorealism is really boring. I've seen all the examples of ray-traced engines and 3D scanned environments, and honestly, I hope gaming never goes that way. Artistic direction is king (especially combined with quality assets and rendering).

Hence why I love Borderlands 2, great art style and direction.

I think GTA5 also strikes a good balance between art and realism in it's graphics. Can't wait to see how the PC version measures up, may be adding it to this list.

Thief (4, the newest one) blew me away. Ran pretty well too given how old my CPU/GPU are.

That's a huge call. PS5 is probably not due until about 2023. We have no idea what hardware it will have. I suspect it will easily run Crysis 3 at 1080p at very high. A PS4 can easily run any game from 2005.

Umm no .....

The PS5 is probably about 2018. The PS4 came 7 years after the PS3 and the PS3 was way more expensive to produce. Why would they take even more time to replace a console that they did not spend very much money on designing for production.

Seconded. With as weak as both 8th gen consoles are, they can't wait a decade again. They'll be announcing refreshes well before 2023.

Fortunately, if they're smart enough to continue to use x86 and semi-custom silicon, there won't be a need to drop billions in R&D.

The Playstation 4 has some pretty darn good graphics on all of their games.

I can't say what game has the best graphics because nowadays most modern games are great, but Titanfall has some very nice scenes on the Xbox One as well.

I think 2018 is way too early. I wouldn't expect it before 2020. They're still happily selling PS3 games and selling the PS3 at the moment.

But even if you are correct and it is late 2018 (xmas). They would likely use some mid range hardware from 2017, which I would expect to be able to run Crysis 3 at 1080p with max settings. 2017 is still 2.5 years away.

PS4 has a little more leeway than the Xbox One, because of their mid range GPU and DDR5 RAM. Xbox One has a low end GPU and DDR3 RAM. They'll be refreshing before 2018, no question.

Both will be refreshing before 2020 though, there's no question or doubt. They simply do not have the hardware this time around to go for a 10 year life cycle; and a 10yr life cycle is just detrimental to gaming in general.

When do you think Nintendo will release their next console?

And what do you think will be the first console to run 4k at full potential?

Next gen should be able just like today's console can run "1080p". Meaning basically that most games will play at 4k but the graphically intensive ones will be upscaled from an arbitrary resolution. They would have to have that arrangement for marketing purposes at the very least. By then more than 50% of people will have a 4k TV if not more.

Skyrim has a technically inferior engine. But with the right texture packs and mods, it can look gorgeous.

Crysis is technically awesome. But the game is a bit more boring.

The Witcher 2 looked very good, imho. Some stuff wasn't perfect, like the brightness. The Witcher 3 is gonna be even better, I think.

I heard BF4 looks good. I never played it, though.

Metro Last Light also looked awesome. Huge surprise that was. Strongly recommended.

I liked the way Dishonored looked. But the rendering is a bit cartoony. Even though it looked gorgeous, I think this it's in the same league as the other 5 games.

So that's 5 games. Anyone got more suggestions ?

Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, Metro: LL

That order. Battlefield 4 meaning the campaign, which looks a lot better than the multiplayer, but also sucks and is not worth playing :)

And what kind of hardware are we looking at for the next generation of consoles? Full size APU system on chip with stacked RAM? Fully integrated digital radio and audio processing?

Battlefield does look good, even in multiplayer. The waves in the ocean are awesome and even actually track back to the gameplay in that you can't shoot people if there is water there. Pretty pretty game

Top 3 IMO.

Crysis 3

crysis-3.jpg

Crysis 3 runs decently on low end hardware and looks really good even with low/medium settings. The game also feels very smooth. Character animation and design is suberb.

Metro Last Light.

metro-last-light-game-screenshot.jpg

While metro looks good the characters and animations are seriously lacking. Performance is inconsistent with my rig getting 40+ fps in most areas then dropping to 20 when viewing certain scenes.

Skyrim with texture mods and a ENB.

Skyrim is certaintly capable of looking amazing but is held back by the dated engine.

I would say that Crysis 3 is the most impressive.

This guy nailed it.

Not too long ago I was making a case that DX9 was within a hair of DX11 based on my gaming with Witcher 2 and Crysis 3. After upgrading my rig I realized how stupid I was.

Crysis 3 running on "Very High" Textures and System spec with a smooth and high framerate is The King. First time I've played a game and said to myself, "This is as good as it needs to be". A few areas are poor, but overall at Crysis 3 Max, I wouldn't want graphical improvement apart from artistic direction and creativity. I'll take more graphical detail, but it's good enough for me as far as i'm concerned. To get Crysis 3 "Very High" at 1080P with solid 60fps I think consoles are 1.5-2 generations away. Playstation 6 might have a shot, there's no hope for Playstation 5 IMO.

It's a massive difference between being impressed with graphics and playing and feeling that that you don't want better but just more games at that level. Crysis 3 does that and IMO you still absolutely need two top end GPU's to see it at 1080P res. I'm hoping The Witcher 3 leaves me similarly giddy and jaw dropped and i'm expecting it will.

Crysis 3 was one of the first new games I saw on my system. Afterwards, I didn't care about the new console launches at all.

After that well, Tomb Raider looked great. I don't have much experience with that many PC games as I just started getting back into it again but still Crysis 3.
Skyrim looks amazing with the right mods, but you need a PC capable of playing them with all of those mods enabled.

I really hope we see games that push the graphical envelope though. It's over 1 year since Crysis came out. Surely SOMEONE can compete with Crysis right? Because each time we always are looking at "Can it run Crysis?" and "Wow, Crysis looks godly."

I'm betting some Crysis 5-6 shots get mistaken for real life shots.
