I was actually surprised at how good the graphics were in Ghosts, at least in certain places. Problem was, some of the areas looked absolutely fantastic and others looked really bad. I also argee with Tomb Raider 2013. It is obviously a console port, but the graphics and controls are actually quite good on the PC.

I also am surprised so many are mentioning Skyrim. Dont get me wrong, it is probably one of my top 5 favorite games ever. But I played TR 2013 for an while, and went back to play Skyrim after purchasing Dawnguard and Dragonborn on the Steam summer sale, and was amazed at how mediocre the graphics were and how terrible were the controls. I acutally gave up playing as a vampire in Dawnguard because the controls were so terrible.

I think Witcher 2 looks better than Crysis 3, although I guess Crysis 3 is more "realistic".

Crysis 3 is also the most boring game in existance.

TR2013 is also a great looking game. Very immersive too.

For RPGs Witcher 2 I would say is the pinnacle for graphics for currently released games.

Crysis3 by a good margin. And yes, Psycho is by far the most detailed, highest quality character model I've seen in any game.

Skyrim has crappy lighting and shadows, and no amount of mods will ever change that core component of the engine render. It comes off as static and cartoony, and I've tried just about everything to make it look better.

As big of a fan as I am of graphic quality, I still think anything resembling photorealism is really boring. I've seen all the examples of ray-traced engines and 3D scanned environments, and honestly, I hope gaming never goes that way. Artistic direction is king (especially combined with quality assets and rendering).

This guy nailed it.

Not too long ago I was making a case that DX9 was within a hair of DX11 based on my gaming with Witcher 2 and Crysis 3. After upgrading my rig I realized how stupid I was.

Crysis 3 running on "Very High" Textures and System spec with a smooth and high framerate is The King. First time I've played a game and said to myself, "This is as good as it needs to be". A few areas are poor, but overall at Crysis 3 Max, I wouldn't want graphical improvement apart from artistic direction and creativity. I'll take more graphical detail, but it's good enough for me as far as i'm concerned. To get Crysis 3 "Very High" at 1080P with solid 60fps I think consoles are 1.5-2 generations away. Playstation 6 might have a shot, there's no hope for Playstation 5 IMO.

It's a massive difference between being impressed with graphics and playing and feeling that that you don't want better but just more games at that level. Crysis 3 does that and IMO you still absolutely need two top end GPU's to see it at 1080P res. I'm hoping The Witcher 3 leaves me similarly giddy and jaw dropped and i'm expecting it will.

That's a huge call. PS5 is probably not due until about 2023. We have no idea what hardware it will have. I suspect it will easily run Crysis 3 at 1080p at very high. A PS4 can easily run any game from 2005.

So when has the "best" graphics ever equated to the best game?

I can't believe anybody would consider Skyrim in the same league as Crysis 3.

Isn't it just an example of people posting what they know? I've personally never played a crysis game (any of them). I've always heard they were the end all be all of graphics...but, since I've never played them, how would I know?

Of course, since I'm pretty selective about what kind of games I play, and the genres I do play aren't known for their graphics (rpg's mostly, with an occasional action game), I normally wouldn't bother voting in a thread like this.

This argument only really works if the internet didn't exist. It's true that you'd still have to experience a game first-hand to really see how it looks, but it's not as if screenshots and HD videos don't exist. Skyrim (even with mods) in the same league as Crysis is a joke.

Skyrim just technically isn't doing much. There's not any advanced rendering going on, and the draw distance at max settings is pathetic when it comes to object/detail rendering. I'm also thinking that's exactly why the map is designed the way it is, kind of twisting and turning up and down a mountain. They kept the valleys to a minimum because the engine renders valleys horribly (screenshots look ok, but when you actually walk through them and see all the object pop-in as you move about, it ruins the immersion).

Before buying C3 (which I enjoyed) I watched the "7 Wonders of Crysis" videos. Very well made videos that show a bit of the graphic quality.

I think its a toss up between Metro: Last Light and Crysis 3, some of the outdoor sections in Metro really stood out for me including the weather effects.

Crysis 3 wins on technicality. As another poster mentioned, you can still desire more 'artistically' but what they have going on technically is just superior.

I'm a crytek fan, but I honestly think MaxPayne3 had a nicer artistic element to it. It wasn't as great graphically, but I think I enjoyed the environment more.

I hope Crytek survives their implosion. I know they tried growing too fast and it's backfiring.

But I think they will survive, and I hope these upcoming games are Crysis 3 quality graphically but taken in a different direction artistically. That was the entire point of them buying up all these different studios. I have high hopes for HomeFront.

Once again, I don't care enough about the main topic to give a relevant opinion. But, even if I did, would I care enough about crysis to to even expend the minimal effort involved in looking up those screenshots or videos?

No, probably not. sorry

And all because Skyrim was crippled to run on the heavily antiquated 7th gen consoles. :(

Elder Scrolls 6 is going to end up the same way, probably coming in at the tail end of the 8th gen consoles too.

Max in-game.

But in the INI file you can set draw distances much further out to take advantage of modern hardware.

And if you dont like that, theres a Skyrim configurator tool to do it for you.

But you'll spend some time on a forum posting about it.

Because someone wanted to know why, right? Or at least, use it as an excuse to have a bit of mild fun with the answer.

Someone wanted to know why Crysis wasn't the unanimous answer, when given the technical specs, I'm sure it probably deserves to be. I gave a possible reason. People still can't accept it. I reiterate reason. No reason to over think it.

I'm sure some Crysis game (3?) probably deserves a unanimous # 1. But, it won't get it. Nothing ever does :p
