If worse comes to worse, he can use a portal to hell he found in space (while working for armidillo aerospace) to introduce valve to hell on earth and turn gabe into a bloated zombie.

Is there any official statement that says that HL2 will be released in this year? :disgust:

Proof (Link)?

Anyways a nod to HL2 too (contrast to D3), reasons being

1) more environment variety
2) faces look better e.g. facial expressions
3) drivable vehicles
4) gravity gun
5) can manipulate Ant Lions via pheremones (not many if any other FPS has that or simialar)
6) team based situations i.e. against strider(s)
7) physics e.g. wood breaking, barricade doors w/ heavy objects, etc.
8) ammo, health, etc. readout is displayed in a conservative way that it doesn't stand out with gameplay visuals in turn making gameplay a bit more realistic.

& assuming

1) better character development and/or interaction
2) storyline
3) higher player limit in MP (mentioned above)

EDIT: #5 You can manipulate ppl in the Jedi Knight series e.g. mind trick & nm the Proof (link). Won't believe what's said about performance & hardware 'til it's reviewed by forum folk or from the likes of AT, FiringSquad, etc. (beta doesn't count btw)

Even if there was an official statement. Although somewhat unlikely, it could go down like it did last year.

Half Life 2 isn't even available and anyway where is your proof that HL2 runs well on mainstream graphics cards?

As for your comment about Doom3 not running on mainstream graphics cards well that's just bollocks. During testing I had Doom3 running on a gf4 mx440, gf3 ti500, gf4 ti4200 and fx5900 xt.

5900xt - Delivered 65fps at 1024 with all of the advanced options disabled and 48fps at 1024 with all of the advanced options enabled apart from aa.

gf4 ti4200 - Delivered 59fps at 800x600 with all advanced options disabled or 34fps with most of the advanced options enabled also at 800x600.

gf3 ti500 - Delivered 51fps at 800x600 with all advanced options disabled.

gf4 mx440 - Delivered 41fps at 640x480 with the advanced options disabled.

As you can see Doom3 was hardly unplayable on any of the video cards I tested it with! :)

Doom 3, It's already done very well sale-wise, and id software has a large fanbase. Besides, some people who played the original halflife AREN'T going to want to play the sequel ;) That I cangaurentee you. Although I will be getting HL2, just to be fair.

Did you just buy an nV card to be an anti-Rollo?

I wonder if we put you and Rollo together if we would have a Rollo/anti-Rollo implosion? :p

Yes, because my life and gaming experience both revolve around an online video forum.

Take them with a grain of salt, but we have beta benches all over the web.

Cutting down all advanced options and lowering your framerate to grainy levels is not how I personally define playable. But whatever floats your boat.

I don't see what is so shocking about my statement. Look at how many people who weren't impressed with D3's gameplay on this very forum.

Its the only thing we have and you cant judge things at all on beta benches. Remember when DIII beta leaked barely anybody could runit now a Geforce 4 mx is running it.

Also last time i checked on those beta benchmarks i thought i saw the Geforce 6 series on top then the Radeons and then :( my card and the Geforce FX series all huddled at the bottom.

DIII will probably do better sale wise and things especially because people remember the original doom and how it revolutionized gaming, then came half life which further evolved it. Now both continue but i think that DIII is going to be more popular.

HL2. I love Doom 3, but three years from now thousands of people (perhaps hundreds of thousands) will be playing HL2 mp, and very few will be playing Doom 3. On my uber rig the game plays like crap with 6+ players online, D3 can not support the masses at this time for big 16 player plus online play, even if you have an FX53 with an overclocked 6800 ultra.

Oh and BTW, in Demo 1 at 1024*768 HQ, 8AF, 0AA i get 90 fps so my system is pretty much on top when it comes to framerate. I'm not going to lower resolution or my run the game in medium to play a 10 player DM game, nor can I imagine how crappy online play would run on mid level gaming machine with a 9800 pro... If it dips below 30fps I'm not playing, and trust me, 3 people shooting the plasma gun in one room will destroy any computer. HL2 on the other hand should run a 20 v 20 player CS map at over 60fps at all times (check out the steampowered forums if you don't believe me).

I was going to vote "Maxis" but I didn't see it on the list.

edit: Doh, FPS.

The only thing at this point in time that could crush HL2 at its inception is buggy code. If it is unplayable due to instability issues, into the trash bin it goes. I got a feeling it is going to have some serious bugs.

Actually, HL2 doesn't run on anything.

I honestly think HL2 will be game of the year, it's what year that is the question ;) To say it runs better than D3 on "mainstream cards" based on an old beta that was leaked before all the code rewrite is just silly though.

My take on this, is that HL2 if done right, with only just few minor bugs, and they get teh story right and blah blah blah... it will be wholey better than Doom 3 in every respect except for GFX and thats it

So HL2 will win! hopefully.....

Tho i still like Doom 3...

More so than mine apparently. It's taken me 31 months to build up 3000 posts. (average ~100 month/25 week/3.5 day)

You, on the other hand, have posted 1500 times in the last 4 months!!! If you're trying to say my life revolves around this when you've posted half as much as me in 13% of the time, I think you need to consider what I just said? ;)

As far as what you said, Carmack's new games have always required the top equipment. He's designing new engines for future games to be based on, not slapping his graphics on old engines.

You don't know that HL2 will run well on anything but current top end equipment either. It's been a year since that demo leaked, a lot can change. Look at how much Doom 3 changed over that year.
