Halo2 might beat it though.

How could the words fresh and cool apply to anything star wars related? It's been around since the 70's and I've read so many star wars books, played so many of the games, and seen all the original flicks so many times fresh and cool just seem like an oxymoron when matched with the title star wars anything IMHO ;)

Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 are completely different games! YOU CANNONT COMPARE THEM!

probably 90% of people will buy both, assuming HL2 will have same system requirements as doom 3, if someone is gonna shell out dough for a nice system for doom 3, they sure as heck are gonna buy both games. i know i will

Yep, agreed....

But, to answer your question, "Which developer will maker more $$$ , bling bling , mucho US greenback :)?" I would think Carmack. Not only will id sell a bunch of copies of Doom3, but they will also sell the engine.

The best selling FPS games since the original Quake are disproportionatly id engine based games. I see no reason for it to change.

One thing that makes me wonder about HL2 is the fact that they are repackaging mods with a new engine. Granted, its makes sense in trying to keep that going, but HL2 itself should be the main attraction, and it doesn't appear to be.

Personally, I didnt like Doom3 very much. It was the typical shooter, with hardly anything (if anything) new. Find key, unlock door, kill monsters. The engine is great though, the game is very detailed, and lifelike. Very real looking. I disliked how dark the game was, but since I know thats what Doom is supposed to be, I cant really complain about that. The multiplayer as it is now, sucks to me. 5 maps, and 8 player max.

HL2 looks better to me, more out door and open spaces. Not as dark, better story, and looks to be just as good graphical wise, if not better. Much better online play, with more maps, players, and game types.

Half Life 2 isn't even available and anyway where is your proof that HL2 runs well on mainstream graphics cards?

As for your comment about Doom3 not running on mainstream graphics cards well that's just bollocks. During testing I had Doom3 running on a gf4 mx440, gf3 ti500, gf4 ti4200 and fx5900 xt.

5900xt - Delivered 65fps at 1024 with all of the advanced options disabled and 48fps at 1024 with all of the advanced options enabled apart from aa.

gf4 ti4200 - Delivered 59fps at 800x600 with all advanced options disabled or 34fps with most of the advanced options enabled also at 800x600.

gf3 ti500 - Delivered 51fps at 800x600 with all advanced options disabled.

gf4 mx440 - Delivered 41fps at 640x480 with the advanced options disabled.

As you can see Doom3 was hardly unplayable on any of the video cards I tested it with! :)

Not everyone would consider 640x480 "playable". Also, if you used the timedemo, it does NOT represent real gameplay. Timedemos run faster than real gameplay.

Ive played it on two machines, one is a 2gig AMD XP, and 9600 Pro. At 800x600 with medium details it crawls around the mid 20's. Thats with no AA and 8xAF, and drivers set to performance. Not "playable" to me at all. Lowering the res makes the game look like legos, because its on a 21" monitor. Sure, to some people it would be playable, but not to many gamers.

I have serious doubts as to the GF4MX running Doom3 well. But then again, "playable" is different for different people. I dont enjoy slide shows.

You have two different questions:

1) Thread topic: Which do you think will rule the fps world this year ?

IMHO, if it comes out soon, more people will be playing HL2 through the end of the year, and beyond. I believe most people will play Doom 3 once, to get to the end, then on to the shelf it goes. Doom 3 will be remembered for it's engine, HL2 for it's game.

2) Which developer will maker more $$$ , bling bling , mucho US greenback :)

Despite my opinion on the games, id is better at cashing in. They're experienced at selling graphics engines, that what they do. That's where they will hit it big (once again). Plus, they have a head start in this area because they're done...

Hey, whatever happened @ the end of the original HL? I played it till you got to the alien planet and then there were some lame levels where you had to jump on some platforms or something and then I got bored and quit.

I really like the earth levels and fighting against the military squads. Hearing their chatter in the background, sneaking up on them, that kind of stuff was way cool. But the alien stuff kinda sucked from what I remember.

So, can anyone let me know what happened? I'm planning on getting both D3 and HL, but so far, I think Call of Duty is the best FPS I've played in quite some time. Way better than Halo or FarCry (I only played the FarCry demo, which was slow on my computer, so maybe I'll like it more when I get a new computer that can run it quickly).

You eventually fight a giant baby, with monsters spawning ala Doom and the Icon of Sin. Somewhat fustrating at first like the Icon, but then trivial once you get the stragedy.
