I have a cousin who just graduated from UofA and he loved it. Very dependent on the niece though. Does she like sports like basketball and football? Does she want to be in a sorority? Is she social?

Unless the free school is absolutely abysmal or the school you'd be paying for is a place like MIT then a free college education is pretty much always better than shelling out big bucks.

Also, what is it your niece wants to study? If she's planning on going to grad school then the name of her undergrad institution is nearly irrelevant.

Need more info. How much would tuition be at UofA? Is it a full scholarship? Does it include housing, books, etc.? If it's just tuition and they are in-state, it's probably not as huge of a savings as you might think.

Tell her to change her major to Medicine or Engineering, otherwise she will never get a job.

Are you an engineer? Sounds like it... they're typically of the "every other job but mine sucks so you're all stupid for doing it" variety. Get the fuck over it.

And I say that as an engineer. There's too fucking many of them, especially mechanical ones. They're going the way of the lawyer because everybody thinks they get paid boatloads just by having the degree, and they think they'll just fall into jobs. Soon enough there's going to be so many that they'll have to make infomercials to get any work.

There are multiple kinds of accreditation a private school can "earn."

Make sure you know which ones matter (regional) and which ones the school has. (national, lol)

Also be wary of any private school that "bought" accreditation.

What a complete lack of information by the OP. Is this a full ride scholarship or partial? What is her major, what does she want to do?

Did she even ask for your opinion? Doesn't sound like you know what you are talking about...

Every time a bank gives a loan to some philosophy major I wanna commit homicide.

Banks really should start to charge more or less for loans depending on people's chosen major. Want to be a history major? This is your interest rate. Want to be an EE? Here is your lower interest rate

Hell yeah on the scholarship... as long as it is a large scholarship.
If it's a full ride, you can't go wrong.

If Arizona is out of state, it is going to cost her at least $60,000 for her degree.

There are not enough semiconductor engineers. RF circuit designers are in short supply. There's something about FB stealing talent from Google. Europe and Asia generally don't have enough engineers to fill their job openings.

Saw this yesterday: http://www.kiplinger.com/slideshow/10-best-college-majors-for-your-career/1.html

It's a Top 10 List for the best college majors for a lucrative career (not all actually require college). Three of the career fields are medical- or pharm-related. Three are engineering (EE, ChemE, transportation sci and tech which includes engineering and aero).

So, it sounds like MechE is a bad choice. I'm guessing that CivE and NukE are along the same lines.

Just showed up in the email:

"New electrical and computer engineers stepping out into the real world this year might not get the multiple job offers and off-the-charts starting pay of the precrash days, but they can rest assured that their skills will be put to good use. Hiring is up by 10 percent over last year, and pay has increased slightly for electrical and computer engineers of the class of 2012."

Read the rest here: http://spectrum.ieee.org/at-work/tech-careers/where-the-jobs-are-2012

Yes yes... I was being generic just like the guy I quoted was. All engineering is not created equal. There is still demand for good EEs and related Es.
