Go for the scholarship since school is insanely expensive now. There are some degrees that matter where you go to but chances are since it's a liberal arts school, it's a degree that it doesn't matter where.

Far from enough information!

Which of the two schools offers a better education in the area of study she plans to pursue?

Does she qualify for in-state tuition at the University of Arizona?

Is the "scholarship" all grants? Or does it include student loans and/or work?

Does the "scholarship" actually make the total cost of attending the private school less than that of the University of Ariziona?

check to make sure the scholarship school is really accredited.

i heard a panel discussion about education and found out that back in the bush2 era, a lot of those iffy training schools and institutes lobbied to ease the requirements for accredation so they could qualify for government grant scholarship money.

the schools were as sketchy on curriculum as before so a bunch of students ended up graduating with worthless degrees regardless if the govt said the school was accredited. now that the govt is cracking down on pell grants most of those for profit "universities" will be scrambling like cockroaches.

What college? If its UNC Chapel Hill. Take it. UNC Asheville is also a decent college but the scenery is amazing!

Edit: private so Elon? Elon is actually a very good school as well as Wake Forest University.

I depends on what she's looking for.

Small colleges tend to have better teaching. This comes from the simple fact that professors at big colleges are hired to put out papers and their teaching skills are almost irrelevant to tenure. If your niece is shy, it's also a lot easier to make friends at smaller schools.

However, larger colleges tend to have a better variety of courses and majors (particularly in the technical fields), with a more diverse community. If your niece is outgoing and self motivated, she may find more opportunities for social and personal development in a larger school.

If I was offered a free ride to college, I would have to give it some serious thought before just deciding to pass on it.

Looks like it's a small (<1500), Methodist, women's, liberal arts, private, $30,000 a year college. Any of those things could be points for or against it, depending on the neice and her goals.

What's the major?

If she's doing some bullshit major where she'll end up as a waitress after college, then it doesn't matter about what school... but free is much better.

Also, where is she now? Strange choice of schools in such different regions...

I would likely pass on that if I were the niece. :\

Has the niece considered the option of taking a degree that might make some money in the end and possibly contribute something to the greater good of humanity... rather than 'would you like a bagel with that?' at some hipster coffee house? A bigger non-liberal-arts school is good for those options.

Tell her to change her major to Medicine or Engineering, otherwise she will never get a job.

Don't know the school and not competitive.

I could find you a dozen decent schools in any given state that you would not know of. Good schools do not have to be big names.

What does she want to major in.

What do you mean by competitive? Sports, academics, graduation rates, etc?

M.I.L graduated from Columbia, valedictorian. Became a teacher before moving on from that.

My sis in law graduated from Columbia, 4.0, vocal performance.:\ Damn, she can sing. Now, high up in HR for a bank in N.Y.

Saying that a liberal arts degree is a liberal arts degree. The individual will make their own path from McD's and up.

Now, if she had a 4.0 in Chem E.............
