It is all relative.....

I can't stand most of the piss that comes out of Europe.
I love the Pacific Northwest's microbrews.

Canada has some pretty good beer, but I have to give the nod to Belgium for overall greatness.

KT

 to the Rogue influence. I think Colorado is right up there in terms of volume of quality brewers.

Overall best though, hard to argue against Belgium or Germany, being that the Germans created the rules for beer brewing several hundreds of years ago
Reinheitsgebot

In terms of variety, though I'd have to go with the US. Thing is, all of the styles are European, but it's hard to find anything in this category as "Uniquely US." The only thing unique about the history of US beer is that it has taken incredibly good historical styles, and run them into the crapper and way beyond recognition (What the fake "Budweiser" and Miller did to the lager and pilsner)

Still, the variety and overall quality of styles brewed in the states is probably unmatched. European countries tend to excel in one or two particular styles.

I've some pretty good French, Polish, Asian beers, etc...so I'd have to go with Italy as the worst Beer. While I was over there, I didn't find anything worthy of the lire that I paid for it. hell, you could by Nastro Azzuro from the fountain at McDonald's....hmmm, shitty beer in wax paper cup....hmmmmmm. Don't get me started on Moretti.

If you think Guinness is the best stout, then you haven't had good stout. Guinness is the Budweiser of that beer style. It's a marketing whore, fairly bland beer, that you can pretty much find anywhere. Not to say I won't drink it, but it's by no means the gold standard of it's class.

Rogue Shakespeare Stout FTMFW! I got a keg of this for my 21st 🙂

Voted best stout in the world several years running, and BEST Beer in the world one of those years. Was in overall top 3 a few of those years, too.

Don't judge Guiness by the crap we get in the states though. Their "Foreign Extra" has the quality of an oatmeal stout and clocks in at 7.5%, iirc. Very tasty, wish it would see the light of day in the US 🙁

Icehouse, keystone, and two hearted ale are some of the worst ive had.

Actually icehouse I can stand if its nearly frozen.

you put a Bell's product in the same sentence as Icehouse and Keystone.....

FAIL!

Best
Country: Belgium
City: Portland, OR (the most breweries within city limits in the world).

Worst
Country: USA (not micros)
City: Taipei?

Edited for best/worst...

in my opinion, belgium is the tenderloin of beer... overrated

germany #1 (for tradition)
usa #1.5 (for diversity)

then theres a big tie between the rest of the major beer consuming countries... uk cz can etc etc etc

IPA - California (Stone, Bear Republic, Sierra Nevada)
Stout - Great Britain (Guinness, Murphys)
Wheat - Germany (Erdinger)
Oktoberfest - Germany (Spaten)
Belgian Abby - Belgium (Chimay)
Trippel - Missouri (Boulevard)

This could go on forever.

I can agree with most of your list, but saying the best stouts come from Britain is like saying the best steaks come from India. The best stouts come from American microbrews; Three Floyds, Rogue, Stone, Deschutes, Alesmith, North Coast, Dogfish Head, etc. Imperial stouts are in a close run with Belgian ales for best beers money can buy; don't sully that with Guinness or Murphys....

Oh, and the best Trippels are Belgian. Chimay, Westmalle, St. Bernardus... though I will admit that I love Fin du Monde (Quebecian).

Damn, now I want some beer...

Portland, OR has the best microbrew/brewpub scene in the US. This isn't even debatable IMO.

Doesn't matter. That two hearted ale was the nastiest shit ive ever had. Tasted and smelled like puke. Maybe my 6 pack was just bad?

Since most of the usual suspects have already been named, I'll name Imperial (Costa Rica). The Ticos make some damn good cerveza.

Another vote for Portland being the best "beer city" in the nation.

Only two redeeming qualities I find in Oregon are the great strip clubs and their fantastic beer.

San Diego has to be the best USA city I've had beer in.

Stone
Karl Strauss
Oggies
Pizza Port
Coronado Brewing

Munich has been my favorite city for beer outside the U.S.

Maybe you just don't like hoppy beers.

This whole post is worthless anyway. What's the point of trying to generalize countries by the quality of the beer? You can go to any country and find very bad beer, just like you can go to many countries and find very good beer.

Don't forget AleSmith. They're delicious.

But I do have to rep Portland, as our city has officially been christened "Beer Town" by our mayor. To name a few of the breweries in Portland: Widmer, Bridgeport, Hair of the Dog, McMenamins, Laurelwood, Portland Brewing Company (who run both Mactarnahans and Pyramid), Rock Bottom, Lucky Labrador, Raccoon Lodge, Alameda, Amnesia, and several smaller ones that I haven't tried, not to mention the presence of Rogue, Deschutes and Full Sail, all brewed in Oregon. We Portlanders love our beer.

Best by countries:

England and Germany traditionally, with American microbrews coming on like gangbusters.

Worst by American Cities:

Pittsburg -- Iron City

Baltimore -- Natty Bo.

Milwaukee - Milwaukee's Best (Really? Then go back and try again, please.)

Worst Beer Trend:

Light "Beer". What's next? Cigarettes with filters??? 😛

tried Sam Adams light?

It's damn good for a light beer!

BEST BEER: Belgium.. but the USA for variety, creativity.

OVERRATED: Germany. Great beer, but should not always be mentioned alongside Belgium. The most overrated, no doubt, UK. The English do not know good beer.

UNDERRATED: Cambodia. Angkor Stout is up there with the best of them, even in country I could only find it in Battambang. They didn't even have it in Sihanoukville, where the brewery is. Philippines also makes the best national lager outside of the obvious beer-producing countries, Filipino San Miguel is delicious.

WORST: Laos, Myanmar, I dunno.. generic, shitty-tasting lagers are so commonplace it is hard to say. I suppose I could give it to Vietnam, but because their beer is also the cheapest in the world (10 cents / glass), you can't blame them and I'm certainly not complaining.
