The MR2s are supposed to be quite fun to drive as well...granted I've only driven the first-gen, but I'd imagine 20 years of engineering wouldn't make it much worse.![]()

Even though I would not get the Toyota, listen to this man, he knows what he is talking about. Quality Post.Originally posted by: Zenmervolt
Of the Porsches, the 968. Cheaper clutch job than the 944. I'd budget $2,000/year for maintenance on either Porsche though. And remember that any, and I mean any attempt to skimp on maintenance will rapidly snowball into expensive issues. Both the 944 S2 and the 968 will need to have the cam chain tensioner checked immediately because it's a common failure (should be replaced every 30,000 miles, many owners forget) and if it breaks then you can say goodbye to your valves and the engine's head (if you're really un-lucky, the head of a valve can snap off and wreck a piston or cylinder).
I've done the 944 thing. There's a reason that I bought my Mustang instead of just putting that money into the 944 Turbo and driving it everyday. A 10+ year old car is a 10+ year old car is a 10+ year old car. No matter how good it was to begin with, it will need much more maintenance than the MR2 Spyder. Additionally, dealers will not know what to do with a 944 series car (the 968 is a 944 series car) because it's too old and most of the techs there won't know enough about them. Additionally, many independant shops ignore the 944 series cars and instead favor the air-cooled Porsches. In any case, expect labor rates around $100/hour and generally at least 3 hours of labor for anything that you take it into the shop for.
Aside from oil changes, I have never had any 944 series car come out of the shop for less than $300. I've had the 951 for one year and have spent over $4,300 in maintenance. That doesn't count the impending clutch replacement (roughly $4,000 by the time all is said and done).
The 944/968 is a committment. If you love the car, nothing else will do. If you don't love the car, you'll hate it for the maintenance that it demands.
I would not recommend any Porsche to anyone who was not completely infected with the car bug to the extent that they are willing to sacrifice other things for their cars.
Go with the Toyota for a daily driver.

I've owned 3 944 series Porsches and 1 914. Even I recommend the MR2. Porsches are expensive to keep running properly and they fall apart fast if the owner doesn't follow maintenance to the letter.Originally posted by: LtPage1

Following the maintenance schedule at a good repair shop however will still be vastly more expensive than the MR2. Also, were his 911's 10+ years old? The people I've spoken with in the PCA have backed me up regarding maintenance needs for their 911s. A 10 year old Porsche is going to cost more, a lot more, to maintain than a 5 year old Toyota. That's just the way things are. I love my Porsches and I wouldn't ever consider getting rid of them unless I were going totally destitute. But the fact of the matter is that the Toyota will have fewer problems and will be less expensive to fix.

If you have the space to do it all yourself, yes, they can be very reasonable to take care of, but most people don't have that, and while a really old 911 (pre-fuel-injection) or a 356 can be a decent car to start with for a mechanic, a 944 series car is decidedly not friendly to the novice mechanic.Originally posted by: Excelsior
It was a 1983 911, but he sold it in...I believe 1997. He did all of the work on the car himself though (never paid a mechanic for anything).
I agree with about the maintenance needs being greater than a Toyota (I know firsthand how reliable/easy to maintain Toyotas tend to be) I was just curious what your thoughts on the 911 were.
