Which camera to get my sister?

I am looking to get a good deal on a camera and have searched around but have no idea which one to get. I have read very good things about the Canon SLR but I'm not quite sure which model and lens to get. My sister is 17 and will be taking pics for the first time and since she is pretty knowledgable, she will catch on quickly on the settings to use (I'm saying that difficulty of pulling off good shots doesn't have to be very easy). As of right now, I feel as if she deserves anything she wants so money is of no essence here. Thanks.
 
Tell you what, I'll sell you my digital Rebel 300D and you can buy me a 30D. 😛

I'll even throw in a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens for free and a couple filters.

Edit-The Canon Rebel XTi is a very nice camera. I'd get that and the 17-40 f/4 for starters. That's about $1500 worth of camera gear BTW.
 
I don't know if starting with a DSLR is the smartest thing to do. If she wants a camera she can tinker with (as far as shooting settings go) then look at the Sony DSC-R1. All the good qualities of a DSLR with the exception of being able to change lenses (duh).

EDIT: Especially crazy expensive things like the Canon 1Ds, tfinch2 😛

If so I'd go with a 30D with various good lenses. A Pro 1 series will be seriously over the top for her. And it is heavy as f0ck (relative to other DSLRs) and built like a brick sh!t house.

Ok, maybe I should have stated a limit.... That 1DS is pretty expensive (way too much for a college boy...).

I'm looking at the Canon Digital Rebel XTi and am thinking about buying her multiple lenses. How is this camera?

I'd recommend the D80 instead. I demo'ed it in a store the other day and the viewfinder was amazing, and the feel was great. That XTi feels like a little toy.
 
No offense to your sis, but I'd start with something like the Canon A series. It's not an SLR, but it'll take good pictures (and better ones once she gets the hang of manual). At the high-end of the range (A710 IS, ~$350), you'll get a 6x optical zoom and image stabilization.

If form factor is more of a concern (like fitting into a purse, for example), then the SD700 IS ($325) and SD800 IS ($400) offer similar quality (but less optical zoom), in a much smaller package.

Also, get her a book about digital photography if you think she will pick up a serious interest. Once she learns what she likes to shoot and how to shoot well, then she can start thinking about an SLR.

It's an excellent choice. Small and lightweight (for a dSLR) and it will accept any EF lens Canon makes as well as the EF-S lenses. Still, for decent glass you're looking at spending at least as much as the camera for a couple lenses.

The Canon 17-40mm f/4L is about $700 and a good Canon zoom would be the 70-200mm f/4L at about $600 .

Have you actually talked to her about what she wants? DSLRs (XTi is pretty good, it's like the standard DSLR to get) but a huge hassle to deal with and may end up spending more time at home, compared to say a S3IS or even an Canon A or SD series.

They are very similar. I don't have any experience with Nikon but on paper they are very similar. Each of them having their positives and negatives. The 30D is a very very good pro-sumer camera. Solid build quality, large lcd, 8.2 MP, spot metering, 9 point autofocus, bright viewfinder and 5fps continuous shooting.

I have Canon glass so for me there is no question of which is the better choice. The 30D will be my next DSLR camera.

Edit-You realize that these are both $1,000 camera bodies we're talking about here (B&H Photo prices) right? Retail B&M store will cost you more like $1,300.
