I believe the D200 would be a direct competitor to the 30D, and the XTi to the D80.

She has no camera right now, and no, I have not talked to her. Why? Cause it's her 17th b-day present :). (Why the !#$% would I send so much money for no reason...).

You say money is no object, but that you're looking for a deal... what is your budget? Everyone has one. If you're looking at a DSLR, how many lenses do you plan to buy? If your budget is large enough, you'll want to get more than one. And you should think about accessories. Just one shoe flash alone may cost hundreds of dollars.

As for the 30D, is the D80 a better camera?

No.

Tread lightly here: If you buy her an SLR, you're effectively more or less condemning her to spending more of her money on camera gear as she gets more and more interested in photography. Wow there were a lot of "more"s in that sentence...

Basically, if you buy her, say, a XTi + lens for around $1500, she'll probably eventually buy lots of CF cards, a CF card reader, extra batteries, a battery grip, more lenses, filters, tripod ($200+), ballhead ($50+++ to $500), monitor calibration tool, etc. Right now at her age, it may not be the best time to just plunk down a SLR because her finances will not be able to keep up with her desires.

I started out with a Prosumer P&S, learned the ropes, then when I got into college started to spend money on SLR stuff when I could actually kinda afford it, and when I KNEW that photography would be a lifelong passion.
