Overall I like my Sapphire, but the cooler is much lower quality than my old 7950. BUT... That 7950 was $480 new (bought on day 1), so there was room to have a good high quality cooler.

So because of the lower quality cooler, the 7950 consumed more power, but ran a LOT quieter.

I have undervolted my RX480 Nitro by 120mV, and slightly dropped the clocks. It no has a tolerable sound level. But at stock settings, The Witcher 3 made it sound like my case was going to take off. But as it is now, I am content with its performance, and the price as good (managed to get one that was not inflated).

This has been my experience with the Nitro. I still need to undervolt mine and remember to run the Tri-X program. In some games it just goes crazy with the fans. Divinity OS2 alpha had the fans pushing over 2k rpm the other day. I'm convinced its fans have issues as they can make odd sounds at times even at lower rpms.

I have yet to game on my MSI Gaming X card but overall impression is good so far in appearances.

I have Anrec P280 case. Three case fans, Nexus 120mm fan on exhaust at around 7v so it's spinning about 700RPM, and two Scythe 800RPM fans 7v'olted to run around 500 I'm guessing. So 3 120mm fans, one at 700rpm and two at 500rpm, decent airflow, but not a ton of it. The entire case is almost silent.

I don't cap my refresh rate. I found that capping refresh rate using AMD Radeon Controls and MSI Riva Statistics Server both introduce input lag that is very similar to vsync, so I do not cap refresh rate. The input lag is not worth the benefits.

Thanks for the reply and info :)

What resolution and refresh rate monitor are you running? And just to confirm, do you mean you don't cap the ingame FPS using the frame rate limiter of crimson?

We've been over this in a different thread, resolution and monitor refresh rate does not have any significant effect on power consumption and temperatures as long as fps is uncapped. However, to humor you, I game either at 4K or 1080p/AA depending on a game. My monitor is 60Hz and I do not cap framerate in any way.

Before you whip out the condescending attitude, I suggest you investigate CPU overhead. At 1080P, many games are CPU limited and thus the GPU won't see 100% utilisation, even if the FPS is uncapped. At higher resolutions, the GPU is the bottleneck, hence the utilisation tends to vastly increase.

+1, It's the best by far.

Depends on how you define the best. It also depends on the silicon lottery.

Yes i heard that Asus is little hot than Sapphire also it's have little better airflow is that true?

0 chance. Asus Strix RX 480 is the coolest RX 480 on the market. Sapphire Nitro is barely better than the reference blower.

Sapphire is a great brand. For the Tri-X based cooler. That's where I always tell people to get Sapphire. If you're talking this cooler? I personally HATE the 2 fan Sapphire cooler. I'll never buy it again.

That's just some information for you OP about brands based on my experience. I have just usually bought sapphire.

This comment is too general. The dual fan cooler on the Sapphire Vapor-X 7970, Sapphire Dual-X 7950/7970 was excellent. The dual-fan cooler on RX 480 is in no way comparable to those amazing coolers.

The best value right now on Newegg is either the PowerColor Red Devil RX 480 or the MSI Gaming RX 480 8GB. Both of these cards are quiet. Although the best deals on RX 480 cards have just passed over Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

I find triple-fan coolers on ~150W GPUs pretty ridiculous. (Although they're arguably even more ridiculous on the 120W GTX 1060.) I mean, just look at all the empty board space on the Strix 480. That's just wasteful. Why not at least do like Sapphire on the R9 Fury, make the board shorter and leave the last 1/4 of the heatsink exposed on the back? Massive airflow improvement, and thus a good improvement to cooling as well. But all in all, tri-fan coolers on ~150W cards are just silly.

For me, the Sapphire RX480 Nitro+ seems like the best balance of moderate size, good looks, and good performance.

OP since I only own 2 Sapphire RX480 8g reference cards, I can give my pros and cons of them.

PROs, work well in CF and blow heat out the back. Don't throttle down much even in CF

CONS loud when fans are at max but I use headphones so it doesn't really bother me. Not much OC room. Not much less expensive than the Aftermarket cards.

I snagged a reference card for retail the first week of release so I was thrilled. I decided to go CF and despite the miners keeping prices high, I found a slightly used exact reference card on e-bay for the same price including shipping.

You can see from my sig, that I also have a 5960x/GTX1080 rig and a 4790k/GTX980 TI SC rig so the CF RX480 is my "fun" AMD gpu rig (Using Intel 6700k cpu).

If you want a FAST single gpu, at a reasonable price (@$350-$400) the GTX1070 is hard to beat.

If you play at 1080 or even 1440p resolution a $240-$290 RX480 might fit the bill.

From what I have read the overclockability (is that a word?) of RX480s is much less than say a GTX1070.

Marcus that MSI RX480 Gaming appears to be an Excellent gpu. Do you have 2 running in CF?

I recently researched the RX480s so I could purchase one of my own. I decided on the MSI RX480 4GB and it's been running smooth and quiet in my system since install (only a week or so). I'm enjoying the boosts I've been seeing over my r9 285. Backplate is a nice touch, too.

Very often as I searched, I saw the MSI, Powercolor, and XFX GTR were the top 3 on people's list.

The MSI Gaming X is very very sexy, Only wish she came in all white :( The All red and black colors totally clash with my All white color scheme theme.

Why not take the shroud off and paint it? White GPUs aren't exactly common.

I JUST took a Dual-X out for a Tri-X. I hated the 7950 Dual-X That was part of the reason I upgraded. It's so loud.

MSI looks like it's doing amazing all around now a day for cooling actually.

Edit: NVM, that was max OCed lol. The Dual-X was really quiet actually throughout its life with me.

What do you guys think of GPUs with mostly reference coolers?

I have the option to buy a used 480 at a good price (in my local currency). It is an XFX, but not the GTR. It is this.

It is appealing to me because it is the cheapest way to upgrade to an RX480 right now. However, I noticed that the card only has a 6 pin connector. Would this matter to anyone here?

Thinking in terms of resale value. Not worried about actual power usage or gaming.

I prefer custom ones with better heatsink/coolers etc, reference ones I guess are ok if you don't overclock or not thinking of keeping the card that long but make sure you have good case cooling, end of the day I think it's better to go with the non reference ones due to better gaming temps which will help lifespan and stability etc...

Sapphire custom ones like Nitro etc are only slightly more expensive then the reference ones, but with better cooling/components etc..

Unless its only being used for mining, or you have a very small case with poor cooling, do not go with a reference. The aftermarket cards are much better for only a bit more money.
