Looking for moderate price and good quality(for safety obviously)

Thanks in advance. Have a good day :)

Arai or Shoei. Used to be you had an Arai head or a Shoei head, but they've expanded their shell-shape options and either can probably fit you well.

Oh wait, you said moderately priced. Scorpion.

Just get a skull cap and be done with it But really, there definitely a tangible difference going to an Arai or Shoei.

The one that fits your head.

Shoei always seem to fit me best so that is what I use... of course, that is a motorcycle helmet. Not sure what use you intend, you didn't say, but motorcycle helmets cannot be used for auto racing events.

Arai is the best, but expect to pay for it. before arai i had a couple generics, then went with arai and could not believe the difference.

you hear sound much better. they stay cool. they fit better. they are lighter.

thats enough for the arai promo. i also hear shoei are good.

oh derp .. CHEAP good helmets? no idea.

All full face helmets are pretty good at keeping your head intact, comfort is where they vary. I have a $400 Nolan right now that isn't as comfortable as the $59 cheapo it replaced.
The best thing about a cheap helmet is you can leave it on your bike and not worry about it getting stolen.

People who autocross/road race use motorcycle helmets also.

If a $100 helmet is snell approved, how much safer is a $1000 snell approved helmet? Might use fancier material but it doesn't make it safer.
There's always someone in the crowd that doesn't get the joke...

I've never seen a road course event that allowed motorcycle helmets. Typically is is Snell 2005 or better. No motorcycle.

I'm not sure why they would... have you ever seen someone trapped inside a burning motorcycle?

I met a fellow 40 years back that had an arm and both legs burned off in a motorcycle accident. After the wreak, he walked over to his burning bike and the gas cap popped off, spraying him with gas that caught fire as it shot out of the tank. Harley paid him a lot of money and redesigned their gas caps. A good helmet would have prevented a fair bit of burn damage to his face.

I don't know how extensive the actual burns were, it could be that amputation was the best they could do back then, or maybe he was on Obamacare. (Obligatory Obama jab, required of all republicans per the 2015 talking points)

Bingo. The helmet that will protect YOU the best is the one that fits the best.

Higher end brands may use more exotic materials (kevlar, carbon fiber) but they will still meet the same standards as less expensive helmets.

The fit, features, and finish may be superior but the safety of the helmet itself may not necessarily be any better.

There was a comprehensive helmet test done a while back where in mechanical testing a $150 scorpion performed the best out of all the helmets.

No company is willing to say their helmet is safer. Theres a ton of stupidity with all helmets, its all driven by the standards boards.

My 2 cents

Helmet makers tend to be grouped by head shapes so first you need to find which brands fit your head best.

From there you narrow it down by price range.
Now consider the type of riding you will be doing, typical weather etc etc.
Some helmets offer great airflow and are very quiet....if you are riding a standard bike with an upright position. Second you hop on a bike with a forward lean and now that same helmet is the nosiest helmet you've ever experienced with the vents open.
Do you want spare face shields? Will you be changing them out often? Then you need to consider how easy it is and how durable the mechanism.
Internal visor? Space for bluetooth crap?
From here you have to research and further narrow it down.

Having said that...
Just about every full face helmet will protect you. What you are paying for is features and quality of components and finish.

ARAI - Super pricey. Quality of the liner and cushions are very high. A premium product. If you have no problem dropping $700 to $1200 on a helmet that offers the same amount of protection as a $80 helmet then by all means. If you plan on doing trackdays are racing, these should be top of your list. Stable helmets at high speed. I believe their vents are designed to break away in case of a spill so don't get clumsy with these.

Shoei - This is another premium helmet maker. Fits a different shaped head than ARAI. Think of these as a budget ARAI when it comes to helmets for street riding. I think they make quieter more rounded helmets at a lower price point. Very nice materials as well. Great venting on a lot of their models.

AGV - Has "italian" flare. Has italian quality. These seem to be one of those helmets that are great in the specs and initial review but turn to a series of broken latches, leaky seals and busted vents. Not a fan of these.

Icon- The "Bro special" often found in brick and mortar stores. For the price, they seem like a great deal. Until you put it on and notice how the peripheral view is less than other helmets. Until you have to use that stupid shield locking setup they have. The vents seem made to break after a month of usage. Popular with the younger crowd who don't know any better or get pulled in by the "I can sell you this with a store discount. Plus its got a skull on the back with dragons and stuff".

Skorpion - A very sold bang for the buck brand. Some models can be on the noisy side. Some are really quiet. Some models have great venting. Some do not. I personally have used EXO-1000 and currently use a EXO-1100.

HJC - A decent budget brand with a few gems in their lineup. RHPA series is worth checking out.

Bell - They've made improvements over the years but I've heard they are a bit weak on ventilation.

Schubert - Another pricey brand. I don't have any personal experience with this but the riders I've known who owned this typically have a PhD, are wearing a roadcrafter and ride a BMW K series with around 8 bajillion miles on the odometer. Usually it's parked in one of the good spaces at the Hospital parking lot. In other words, Schuberths have their fans and typically these people are those who put a lot of thought in to what gear they have.

Suomy - Never sure how to pronounce the name so I assume they are for hippies and vagrants.

Speed and Strength - I've heard these are a bit prone to quality issues and are not the quietest of helmets. For the price they make a great spare "loser passenger" helmet

Depends what you are looking for and what your budget is. Everyone has an opinion on who makes the best helmet. ARAI is a great helmet, but I would argue that Schuberth makes a better helmet.

What are you looking for within your budget.

- Full face or modular?
- Wind Noise? - Do not discount this... I wear plugs most of the time, but for the short trips sometimes I skip them.
- functional venting

I wear nothing but modulars now. They are designed to be used as a full face when rolling but you can flip up the face at a light, getting gas, taking a drink, etc. Some modulars convert between 3/4 helmets, etc and can be worn chin exposed. Not recommended if you like your chin. I think modular helmets are more ideal for touring as I like to do. They do create more wind noise than a full helmet but as you go up in price they get better in that dept. I prefer HJC as I can't stomach spending the $800 on the Schuberth modular.

FWIW I've read articles suggesting that cheaper helmets actually are safer. Mostly that they have one shell size and the foam tends to be thicker than the expensive ones.

I liked my scorpion the best for cheaper helmets. I have a more oval head. Its hard to tell someone to get X brand though. Everyone's head is different. Buy what fits.

I had one like that, flip up chin bar. It was great. Even had flip down sun visor built in so you didn't have to keep changing your visor. You could put it up or down as conditions demanded. Actually ended up importing one from the UK as I couldn't get it in the US.
