Which 5.1 Speaker Set to get?

Hey Guys,
I'm curious in your opinion, what should I upgrade first? :x I'm currently running an all Philips System I got for like 300 😛 I've Got a Philips FR 968 with 100w per speaker output. A set of unmarked philips 5.1 speakers with a Philips SW990 50w sub 😱 I know I Need to upgrade, it's kind sad 😛 Any questions on specs and I can hopefully tell you. I was recently looking at the Onkyo TX-SR501, is that a good choice for the money or should i look elsewhere for a receiver?

Update with input from others I decided I would go with Speakers first. Now my dilema lays upon which speaker set should I get? I was recently looking at three different sets. The before mentioned Fluance AV-HTB, JBL NSP, and Polk RM6200. Any experience with these good or bad? Any suggestions on sets other than these? Price range being about 300 with or without subwoofer.

what are you looking for? receiver? a complete 5.1 system?

what size is the room?

will this be for movies? or music?

I was just going to upgrade piece by piece, receiver, speakers then sub(if it's not provided). It would be for some music but for the most part it would be for movies. The rooms approx 13 x 13.

Get a powered sub... Made a huge difference in my home threater system when watching movies...
 
I personally am tempted by the Fluance speakers, only 200+50shipping.

cheapo receivers can be found in hot deals forum

outpost.com raised the sherwood to 129.99 + 20 shipping

refurbished onkyo sr500 receiver is ~170

denon avr-1603 is 200 shipped from 6ave.com

I got the denon because outpost.com raised 30 dollars on the sherwood.
 
i do have to agree w/ ameesh on this one....get a tv you'll be happy with first, then we can go from there

if you already have a tv, personally, i'm a much bigger proponent of upgrading speakers first.
a good speaker will sound better w/ crappy power than a crappy speaker w/ crappy power, whereas a crappy speaker and good power won't necessarilly make that much of a difference. so check out those fluance if you're into htib, but personally, i reccommend checking out paradigm and some of the other smaller speakers from higher end manufacturers and going set by set for more gratification. look at b&w dm302s as well...great sounding speaker for ~250/pair
 
250 a pair? :x I'm still in college. I think the fluance would be more of my range. Not wanting to spend more than 300 for a receiver or speakers, maybe 200 tops for a sub. BTW when you said powered sub, you mean one that isn't powered by the receiver? If so, mine doesn't, it's got its own plug.

BTW I have a TV I'm happy with for the time being, next thing is a HDTV projector 😛
 
The biggest differenceyou will see is in speakers. I know it may seem like getting a better reciever would help, but the thing actually producing sound is the speakers. Get your self a decent 5 speaker set up and go from there (hold off on the sub for now). Check out harmanaudio on ebay, they have some decent stuff for cheap.

Still make sure you get at least a matching amp.


Good Speakers + POS amp = Dead speakers....


Clipping is ....well...jsut bad.

True. Do you have any specs on the reviever???
 
For the price of the TX-SR501 ($299 at CC now) I'd check about to see if you can't find a TX-SR600. Your neighborhood Circuit City might have some, and as they're rolling them out for the 601 ($499) they should be selling at or below the price of the 501. Could probably get a display model 600 (if they still have them) for around $249-$279.

But yes, for the money, go with Onkyo imo.

Cheaper still if you go through okyo's website..i remember 600's being sold dirt cheap.

I personally would not go with Onkyo, up until a year ago I was very big into HT and Onkyo (at least a year ago) was overrating their amps and not putting out a quality product. If you search hard enough you will find what I am talking about. Because you are on a budget, i would recommendthese. they can be had for abotr 250 plus shipping and are a very good buy. If you are looking at recievers go with either denon, yamaha, or a HK if you can find a deal on one. You can pick up a denon 883 for well under $400. But considering budget restraints, the yamaha is a little more for you money.

The onkyo tx-sr600 bests the Denon 1803. HK is good but expensive and not as good as the old days.
