Best way to compare monitors is to go to a store where they have them on display (pardon the pun) and just LOOK at the differences, if this is at all possible.. Personally, I have the Sony CPD-G500 21" .24dp 2048x1536 monitor -- best upgrade I've ever made and it was well worth the extra bucks over other brands/models.. As for the lines, what lines would be my response, not because they aren't there, but simply because after awhile you just don't even notice them unless you are looking for them.. IMO, that REALLY shouldn't sway you one way or the other as there are other more important things to consider.. The other thing to pay less attention to unlike other pieces of hardware is the price.. Yes, you should only spend what you can spend, but if there's one thing not to "cheap" on, that would be, imo, the monitor.. :)

Personally I find AG monitors a lot easier to live with--the text is sharper. After having a Samsung 900NF for a while, I find shadow mask monitors look a little blurry to me.

As for looking at monitors in stores--this should be a good idea, but in reality, a lot of stores don't know how to tweak the monitor settings. I once walked down a couple Best Buy aisles where practically half the monitors were set to a 60hz refresh rate. Most customers won't know enough to understand that the flicker they see can be fixed. I went and told a sales clerk and he looked at me like I was from Mars.

I deal with all types of monitors at work, and I have formed my own opinion about them:

Today's high-end AG monitors are excellent. Text is sharp and very easy to read. The flat screen is perfect for desktop use.
Today's high-end SM monitors are excellent. Text is also sharp. But color reproduction on a SM can't be beat... perfect for graphics design and hard-core gamers with money :p

I use a 1998 Viewsonic P817 21" SM (360MHz video bandwidth, 120Hz@1600x1200) with a high-quality BNC cable (yes, the cable makes a difference). The color reproduction and text clarity blows away any other monitor I've been witness to. The only trade-off? Because it's a SM monitor, I have to put up with the "bubble screen" effect, although it's barely noticeable compared to older/inferior SM's. And it's not noticeable at all when playing games, which is why I bought it.

I had a friend come over once and yell, "Oh my god!!! What are you playing?"
(me) Everquest (running in 1600x1200,4xFSAA,full-screen)
(him) Bullsh*t, those graphics are way better than Everquest.

I've always noticed that the AG monitors tend to have better saturation and more contrast between colors... Overall brighter. I use a samsung 955DF which now sells for about $250 (19 inch) and it is awesome.

Ont he box it says that it is ".20 dotpitch" but i dont know if that is exactly the same as the dotpitches that other monitors talk about. It is very sharp and i run 1440x1080 on it, at 75hz no problem...

On another not, what causes a monitor to "pop" sometimes? I had this happen with an older monitor of mine and my samsung will do it every few days where it makes a popping sound, and then the picture jolts for a second... is it because i am running out of spec on the refresh rate? 72hz is the max supported i believe.

Dont forget there are high end FLAT SM monitors on he market these days.Although the only benifit to a flat CRT is some glare reduction.

I understand what your saying about AG monitors but you wouldn't hesitate to recommend a SM monitor to a hardcore gamer then ?

All thanks for responding, this has got to be the most I have ever learned from one thread.

>LG is the only remaining manufacture using slot mask that I know of.

do you know if the LG Flatron monitor uses slot mask ?

BTW, Diamondtron is a modified form of Trinitron. Sony first cames out with Trinitron and then the other company(can't remember which firm) got the deal going with sony and Diamondtron is out.

<<The equivalent measurement for the latter would be the horizontal distance between a dot and the closest dot of the same color in the next row down, which equals the dot pitch times 0.866. To compare a standard dot pitch with a stripe pitch, therefore, multiply the dot pitch by 0.866.>>

AKA horizontal dot pitch. You still can't compare stripe pitch directly against diagonal dot pitch, that was what I meant.

You've contradiction here, DF is not AG tube, it's flat invar shadow mask.

PS: Samsung has a new 19" model to replace 955DF, it's 957FS - 0.20mm horizontal dot pitch, 100 degree deflection, 250Mhz.

EDIT:I was able to find it by going through www.samsung.com... looks about the same with better refresh rates and almost twice the pixel frequency

I'll take my Hitachi shadow mask over any Sony monitor anyday of the week.
The Hitachi is superb in picture quality and brightness.
Put an Apature and a good quality Shadowmask side by side and you be the judge.
No way will I look at them lines on my monitor, and yes you can see them and they are annoying.
With the new Flat Shadowmasks out, the quality speaks for itself.
I had 2 Sonys and will never get another after my Hitachi came in.

dkozloski, how can convergence be better with a shadow mask tube when slot mask and AG tubes don't need the vertical convergence to be as exact?
