Which 19" monitor Dell P991Trinitron or Samsung SyncMaster Dynaflat 955DF?

You're talking about two monitors not even in the same class. P991 easily kills the 955DF, you have to compare the P991 to Samsung's 900NF.

why do you say they are in a different class, both are perfectly flat, both will do 1280x1084 at 75mHz.
I am leaning towards the P991 though, I have a 19in LG monitor and am not happy with it

I think Lxi is trying to say that the 900 NF "natural Flat" monitor is the higher end choice of the Samsung Monitor line and when you are comparing a trinitron monitor to a Flat monitor you need to use the best Flat screen monitor that particular manufacturer makes to do it justice

That doesn't make them the same class. The P991 is a Trinitron, which is an Aperture Grille technology, the 955DF is a DynaFlat, Samsung's Shadow Mask technology. These two are completely different beasts. Besides the difference in tube, the P991 is capable of refreshing at more than 90Hz at 1280x1024 compared to 955DF's maximum of 80Hz; and the P991 easily does 85Hz at 1600x1200, while the 955DF can only manage a laughable 65Hz at 1600x1200. These two belong to difference classes, the 955DF is an extreme value monitor, while the P991 is near professional level. That's why I say if you want to compare, compare the P991 to Samsung's 900NF of the same class.

i have not idea why dell's docs show the p991 as only capable of 75 hz at 1280x1024 (which no one should ever run anyway because everything is screwed up), mine is doing 1400x1050 at 85 Hz right now. i wonder if i can push it further?

OK I see where you are coming from, Some people feel the shadow mask is better than aperture grill, for viewing though. I haven't made up my mind yet, i've got a 15 inch trinitron at home and a 19 inch shadow mask, but I 'm not happy with the 19inch,
so I'm really leaning towards the P991, i'm just trying to get the cost down closer to $300, like techbargains has on their front page

Anything above 17 inch using a shadow mask is not nice. Take it from someone who has gone from a 19inch shadowmask to a 19 inch AG monitor.

I don't even know why you are bothering to compare. The Trinitron is easily worth the extra cash. A friend on mine just bought the 955DF and I don't like it at all. There are a lot of problems with visual quality, everything seems shaky, especially with movement. And this is on a new, boxed monitor. Sony's and the AG technology kick major ass. I'm using a 21" trinitron right now, and it was worth the money. So to answer your question, Sony: Yes - Samsung: No

<<Sony: Yes - Samsung: No>>

If that implies every monitor Sony makes is superior to Samsung's, then you're wrong. As you clearly have not seen Samsung's NF line; you're making a bold conjecture based on a comparison between an $700 Sony and a $200 Samsung.

I'm sorry, it wasn't intended as a broad, all-encompassing generalization. In this case, I feel the Sony is the better monitor. Obviously there are millions of other combinations where 'Sony:yes MonitorX: No' wouldn't apply. I'm glad to see you read the preceeding statement however,

<< So to answer your question... >>

I can see how it would be easy to mistake this as a generalization. 😛

I have the Samsung 900NF (aperture grill, 19") with a Matrox G400 video card and the Samsung 950p (shadowmask 19") with an ATI Radeon LE. For text the shadowmask 950p wins hands down.
