Update 3/30
I went to Citibank today with the intentions to get the branch manager to either sign or notarize the letter. I spoke with him and he said unfortunately he couldn't get involved further with our situation. He said it was against bank policy to get involved in civil matters that could eventually end up in court. He said he would be risking his job if he signed the letter. He agreed 100% with the letter and we spoke more about the situation. I showed him the LL's check from Chase and he was speechless.
After the bank I went to the post office and sent the rent check, oil check and letter certified mail with signature confirmation.
A couple hours later I got this email from the LL
TJ, April's rent check is almost due and I was wondering if you planned on paying it. If you have not yet sent it, I will be in xxx all weekend and could pick it up.

Depending on distance the mail has to travel, the LL will need a new set of drawers Sat or Mon.

Sometimes I forget how to spell my name, or else I'll accidentally skip a few letters in my head, causing them to get written out of sequence, or the surface I'm using isn't at a good height. Yeah, there's some significant variation from time to time.:\
I'm sure a handwriting expert could see the consistencies though.

You may want to take the family out Sat afternoon just incase the LL comes by to say hello. Ensures a cooling off period just in case. The tone in recent correspondence is getting sharper.
He is out 2500 and hoping that you are the ticket to getting it back without some fight.

i was watching a documentary that talked with a handwriting expert. they said they expect changes. they would be more worried if it was the exact same every time.

Check for April was put in the mail today. Certified, to endure that it does not get lost or mishandled.
This also ensures that he knows that some one will spend time waiting and will have to sign for it if he wants it bad enough. Otherwise, he will have to make a trip to Post Office next week. Screwing his schedule up.

The rent check for April was put in the mail yesterday, Friday March 30, 2012. It was sent certified mail to ensure that it does not get lost or mishandled.

Spoke too soon. Just got an email from him saying his attorney would be contacting mine on Monday.
How an attorney could advise him your in any way culpable as to what happened to the check is just baffling, considering he got it, endorsed it, put his acct# on it, and then somehow it gets credited to another account?. Try and take that to court and show any judge how you were negligent in ANY way is a joke..
