Where would you rather go, Berkeley or UCLA?

okay, that's a fine way to rank schools, but it will still depend a lot on field and location. For instance, I doubt their are many CEOs of high tech companies from princeton or very many CEOs of financial companies from cornell.

As for location, most "leaders" of west coast companies probably went to cal or stanfurd. On the east coast, many people probably haven't even heard of berkeley.

i pondered this same question when I was entering college. I chose UCLA and not Berkeley coz I wanted to be closer to home. I've always wondered how my life would be different if I went to Berkeley instead. But it doesn't matter anymore since I've graduated and things are cool.

I would agree with this ranking for "overall prestigue". But the rankings will change depending on the school (major) in question. For instance, in engineering, from your list I would rank only MIT ahead of berkeley; for business I would rank upenn ahead of the rest, etc.

More importantly, the leaders of companies and of this country are often nepotistic issues. For instance look at our current president .... does the fact that he attended Harvard & Yale mean that in order to be president you HAVE to attend Harvard and Yale? Or does it mean that his dad went to both and his family had a lot of money.
more on topic you're right ... UCLA is a nicer area, hotter girls, better weather, etc. But UC Berkeley is the best public school in the country, and has one of the best Math programs overall. I've had friends visit from Yale, Harvard etc sit in on my UNDERGRAD math classes and walk out saying that this was WAY harder than anything they've ever seen. So if you're going to college to hit on girls and party .. go to UCLA (hell go ANYWHERE ... if you're going to college for that save your money rent an apartment in Westwood and just have fun) .... if you want an education go to UC Berkeley. Not only are the classes tough but so is the competition.

i'm biased. i love it here at cal so i would tell you to go here. the caliber of people you're studying with and learning from is tops. i'm consistently astounded by my peers and professors. some of them are simply brilliant. i know the applied mathematics major is tops. it's difficult but you learn a lot.

ucla is okay and they do nice looking gals (a lot of my attractive gal friends went there ... i can attest to that). berkeley does have attractive gals, too. it's not like theyre extremely hideous up here or anything. i just came back from a party tonight and there were plenty of attractive ladies there.

you get a very different educational experience up here at berkeley. i wouldn't trade it for anything. you're close to SF and most of the bay area is accessible by public transit (it is free if you use your UC Berkeley class pass).

one thing i dont like about being up here is the rent. wish they'd reinstate rent control. i'm sure you'll find that a problem everywhere, but it's especially a nightmare up here 'cause all of the apartments and houses are hecka ghetto. but who gives, its just 4 years of your life. if you can live in less than "bel-air" conditions (that you'll find at ucla) for a few years and imho get a better education, i say go for it. teaches you to appreciate nice things, i say. hahaha. as for living half an hour away ... it's up to you. dorm your first year and you'll be on campus. if you dont want to pay rent and not live in ghetto berkeley (not all of its ghetto, im just exagerrating) then commuting is an option. a lot of my friends commute from union city/fremont. some from across the bay from who knows where. i'm from socal so i forget the cities easily. anyways hope this helps. good luck in whatever you do.

Having lived in the Bay Area all my life, 4 years ago I had to make the choice and I almost selected UCLA. My parents "strongly urged" that I go to Berkeley, and so I did.

4 years later, I'm graduating in 14 days with a BS in Business Administration and I do not regret one bit my attending Cal. It's close to home, which is wonderful for days like today (Mother's Day) and the education is top-notch. Granted, the liberal attitude of a lot of the Berkeley (and California) population can get on my more moderate/conservative nerves, but I just learn to avoid them.

That list sucks, you left out most of the ivys and the mid western schools such as U of Chicago and NW and how could you put Princeton below U of Penn?

Penn has argueably the best business program in the us

But really, I wouldn't have it any other way. You'll get a great education at either school, but being close to home is a great thing. Really. Also, I get the impression that UCLA is a big party school, but Berkley is a place where people really try to improve themselves and get a good education.

if your goin into politcs then yes it is bad. the reason we has a successful two party system in the US is because we both democrats and republicans try to hug the center as much as possible, and thus extremist groups are eliminated
